Snacks and the City: The Latest Food & Drink News in Beijing

2018-01-10 ThatsBeijing

By Noelle Mateer

Here, a roundup of things we ate and gossiped about this month – for journalism, for research, for you, readers.

The Georg’s winter menu has more options for more taste buds – and they’re all uniformly delicious. Our That’s Beijing Golden Fork Awards Restaurant of the Year still offers refined Nordic-inspired dishes, but now also boasts hefty a la carte options, including a big ol’ rack of lamb, just in time for winter.

Big Bear Baked Goods has a new Chocolate Sea Salt Cookie Butter that comes in adorable little jars. It’s like Beijing’s own Nutella – spread it on toast and your tongue. The Bear himself (Jon Ellis) is repatriating to the States, but fear not: he tells That’s the cookies shall continue in his absence.

Q Mex Taqueria is in the brunch game now, which means brunch tamales are now a thing.

Domain, the cafe at East Beijing, has a new grab-and-go fridge for sandwiches. Try the tomato-mozzarella and take it to the office (or just sit in their cute little cubbies).

MOKA Bros is opening its fourth Beijing location, in Joy City Xidan. The Bros have been spreading their power bowls and smoothies across China, with new shops in Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai over the past two years. This marks the brand’s first spot in Xicheng though, which feels like another city sometimes – am I right, Sanlitun friends?

The Nest in Shanghai

Finally, ultra-popular Shanghai restaurant The Nest is coming to Beijing. If you’re thinking ‘Where have I heard that name before?’ you might have seen an unfortunate news item about an alleged hate crime occurring at their Bund-side location. According to customers, a lesbian couple were harassed and attacked by Nest security guards, which prompted widespread outrage from China’s LGBTIQ+ community.
