Shanghai ARTZ Gallery Launch

In the context of Shanghai’s flourishing with contemporary art galleries and museums, ARTZ’s launch represents a premiere for the local art scene: ARTZ is the first online platform which leads off to present Romania’s contemporary art to China, as it is well known that the two countries share 70 years ofpolitical, economical and cultural relationships. ARTZ’s mission is to develop a program of exhibiting a selection of works signed by famous Romanian artists, with museum-level curatorship, artist talks, and cross-cultural projects in Mainland China.

Why this niche: because Romanian art is extremely well appreciated and collected in Europe and USA, but less known in China, therefore ARTZ aspires to be one of the most important promoters of Romanian art here. ARTZ Gallery is an active promoter of the cultural interchange between China and Romania, aiming to be an important factor in the development of the art industry of both countries.

The gallery’s collection also includes a high-standard selection of international artists, each with a uniquely modern approach to art, as their goal is to promote both young and established contemporary artists regardless of nationality.

The exhibition displayed on the occasion of the ARTZ Gallery launch features 6 artists: Irina Banari, Zooming Dynasty and Sergiu Roman from Romania, Peggy LePoulen from France, Mary A. Johnson from USA, Joy Chiang from Australia.

Irina Banari

Irina Banari, born in Edinet (Republic of Moldova) in 1986, graduated the National University of Arts Bucharest with a BA in Fine arts decorative and design(2006-2009) and MA in Strategies of creation and industrial design (2009-2011). Living and working in Shanghai since 2011, her artistic activity was awarded in 2015 with the Asian International special Prize, offered by Zhoupu Museum in Shanghai. Irina Banari’s art was exhibited in Romania, France, USA, South Korea and China.

In her art, Irina Banari explores the mechanics of everyday practice turning physical into metaphysical experience. By quoting Hannah Arendt and Max Scheler’s concept of “Homo Faber” - describing man's ability to control the environment by means of tools, Irina Banari chose this title for her first Asian series of paintings made in Shanghai. Therefore, she conceived a hybrid project about the innatedrive of humans to fabricate things, to invent and be creative, or destructive, if the “tools” bare malefic qualities. Questioning the "knowledge tools”, the "power tools” and humans as tools, the artist elaborated a visual response based on her own experience and most recent fears.

Sergiu Roman

Sergiu Roman was born in Iasi, Romania, in 1977. He started making oil paintings at the age of 13, but later he became attracted by philosophical ideas. In 2003 he received the Bachelor Degree in Philosophy and Logic. In 2011 he moved to Shanghai, China, where he resumed his artistic activity.

Sergiu Roman started to participate in art exhibitions, both personal and group shows, in China’s major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou. He impressed the art collectors all over the world, and was featured in art magazines from China, Italy, Germany and Romania.

In his most recent series of paintings (called“Mise en scene”), the world, the human life, and the whole history of mankind, are the stage where the protagonists are ourpersonal experiences and dramas, the human fragility and suffering, the entropy and the loss of meaning – the impossibility of overcoming our negative impulsesand selfish limits. The artist makes the viewer witness the creation of the world, the pre-order of all things, using many different techniques, overlapping different areas of meaning, as symbolically intending to bring together all the layers of reality: the micro and macro cosmos, the psychological world and the physical world, the history of humankind and the individual destiny, our crimes and our suffering. Sergiu Roman’s art has animmediate impact on the viewer through the force of compositions, through the strong chromatic in which the quality contrasts play a major role inemphasizing the structural elements of his paintings.

Zooming Dynasty

With a keen eye for extracting the extraordinary from the mundane and with an unquenchable drive to keep discovering, the elusive Romanian photographer behind the “Zooming Dynasty” visual project currently residing in Shanghai, is constantly on the prowl for the next breathtaking cityscape or the right angle to capturea fleeting moment of a story worth telling.

Against a multifaceted background reminiscent of a wide palette of ever changing scenery, locations and subjects, the scope of this particular artist's pursuit becomes evident to the persistent spectator: it is an endless quest in search of not the perfect location, nor the most impeccable composition, and least of all of the ultimate photographic product, but rather constantly chasing ephemeral moments that might convey human emotion to the viewer, a kin to the futile endeavor of reproducing and delivering sound or scent by means of animage, and only slightly more attainable than it.

Shrouded in anonymity and going to lengths to avoid public attention, the artist allows his work to speak for him and tell the story of his journey in ways that cannot be matched by mere articulated speech. While an image is said to be worth athousand words, “Zooming Dynasty”’s photography speaks tomes.

Peggy Le Poulen

After having graduated the “Beaux Arts” School of Tourcoing (France) in 1998, and getting a BA in Visual Arts (University of Lille, France – 2000) and another onein Textile Designer (CAI Tourcoing, France - 2002), Peggy Le Poulen worked in France as a Textile Designer for Carpet Product. Working as a designer, she discovered her impetus and her passion for artistic creation through ceramics and sculpture, and the installation /location of her works in defined spaces.

Arrived in Shanghai in 2006, she went into painting and experimented with a wide range of techniques and materials by adding more diverse media.  Her style iseclectic and varied, and has evolved and changed over the years.

The viewer’s sight is exacerbated, hooked by spontaneity, profusion, the richness of the colours present in her painting, which give a feeling of joy, well being and energy. She continues to be fascinated by the effect of different materials, weaving various threads and embroidery stitches.  All these mixed media influence and have an impact on her creation.  Her passion for ceramics, sculpture and textile techniques have definitely influenced her work, which she will continue to develop in future creations.

Mary A. Johnson

MFA,SUNY University at Buffalo: 2013

BA,[Fine Art: Painting] Gordon College: 2008

Mary A. Johnson, an American artist who had lived and worked in Beijing for the past five years, started her artistic career as a painter (MFA at SUNY University, Buffalo, New York in 2013), but her passion for photography and her drive to study chemical reactions between natural pigments inspired her in creating works on paper and photographic collages of extreme beauty. Her work engages the gaps between the repulsive and the seductive; the image and experience. She has shown her work in the United States and China. Her work is in numerous private collections. Recently, she was invited to participate in Art Nova's"100" Exhibition at the Agricultural Exhibition Center in Beijing and to be a part of the Snow Mountain Artist Residency in Lijiang, the UNESCO World Heritage site in China's Yunnan Province. She was a full time Lecturer at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), now teaching at the University of North Texas.

Taking photographs of decaying materials, editing and decomposing these images into Baroque like compositions, the artist conceives new contexts that generate new narratives. The artist’s digital collages represent her means to “negotiate” with the representational world and to “play” with the abstract, surreal world. These rich compositions are “places of tension” as the artist states in her presentation, whose dramatic aura resides in the contrast between form and shapelessness, texture and transparency, smoothness and roughness, saturationand void, between decay and growth as death and life.

Joy Chiang

Joy Chiang

Joy Chiang is an artist living and working in Melbourne, Australia painting contemporary abstract art. She strives to create work that captures emotions and beauty through the language of colour. Her background is in urban planning and development where she studied at the University of Melbourne, but she has always loved everything art and design.

Joy describes her mix media art as the physical manifestation of her curiosity intersecting with the start of an early mid-life crisis; blending inspiration from nature and adding explosions of city chaos. This results in beautiful emotive pieces. Her latest work has been inspired by motherhood and the love for her family.

Joy Chiang defines her art as spontaneous but intentional. Each work is a series of layers until the final image has built up to bring dimension to the surface along with imagery to narrate the viewer through the painting. Joy’s paintings, with their bold brush strokes, colorful patterns, and exuberantly painted movements, give the false impression of simplicity, yet remains passionately complex. Interested in organic movements and synthetic boldness, Joy always conveys a sense of freedom and of joy.

Her paintings have a sense of calm but also chaos where the tide meets the stream. The organic movements are blended with the confident calligraphy strokes inspired by her Chinese heritage. The combination comes together with a strongsense of direction and place in the world.
