创新驱动,科研强国 | 京领-华附国际部联合发布《2021国际学校高中科研特色研究报告》

2022年4月30日,京领与华附国际部联合发布《2021国际学校高中科研特色研究报告》。


报告亮点


本报告共包含科研素养对高中生的意义、青少年如何参加科研、2022年京领国际学校特色榜·科研特色校展示三个章节。


报告以中国国际高中为研究对象,探讨科研能力培养背景及培养路径,并以国内具备科研特色的实力名校为例,分析中国国际学校科研素养与能力培养方式,旨在通过分享科研优势学校的办学经验,促进中国国际教育升级,推动中国国际学校科学化办学、特色化发展。


华附国际部


华南师范大学附属中学国际部(简称华附国际部-HFI)。2009年3月,在成功开设IFY英澳预科五年后,经美国大学理事会(College Board)授权批准,HFI开办了华南地区首个AP美式高中。


HFI以崭新的国际化人才培养视野,将中外先进教学模式、教学方法和课程进行有机融合,构建了有自己特色、高品质的课程体系、教学模式和评价体系,一方面保持了中国学生在数理化学习方面的优势,保证了学生对中国文化的传承;另一方面,更好地对接海外精英高等教育体系对专业知识、个人能力、人文修养方面的培养需求,得到了海内外大学的高度认可。


HFI注重对于学生科研素养与能力的培养,学校从课程、活动等多方面引导学生探索科研领域,挖掘科研能力。学校学生近年来在多项科研竞赛中取得优异成绩,其中,在2021年京领全球院士论坛暨青少年科研论坛中,HFI的14名学生分别包揽特等奖及一二三等奖的奖项,同时,学校也获评“中国国际学校科研强校”。

科研素养对高中生的意义




虽然不是每一个学生都要专研于科学技术研究,成为某个领域的科学家,但不成为科学家,不代表不需要拥有科研素养。科研素养的培养对于学生,尤其是高中这个衔接高等教育的时期的学生,显得尤为重要。

科研素养之学会深度思考


著名科学家爱因斯坦曾说:“学习知识要善于思考,思考,再思考,我就是靠这个方法成为科学家的。”爱因斯坦连用三个“思考”来说明思考的重要性。学生的科学探究能力与其科学思考的深度密切相关。德国著名剧作家歌德曾说过“谁不用脑子去思考,到头来他除了感觉之外将一无所有。”世界著名的科学家、作家都是经过思考形成自己对知识的重新解读,进而形成新的创作品和知识体系的。[1]


很多高中生在申请国外大学时,在面试环节可能会发现面试官非常注重科研经历。却不知,面试官看重的从不是科研经历,而是科研思维。换句话说,在申请中拼的不是科研经历,而是底层的深入思考、钻研和运用。也就是说,拼的是对问题的一种思考过程和认识深度。这也是项目式学习(PBL)风靡全球的原因。在京领《“高水准”的PBL应该怎么做?》一文中提到在项目式学习的过程中,学生有充分的机会修改、反思和改进想法,他们学着像历史学家那样思考,学着用构建科学模型来解释世界是如何运作的。[1]


对于高中阶段的学生来说,摆在第一位的最佳学习方式并不是背书和尝试,是投入到项目式学习的实践中,以及留出时间来进行深度思考[1]

科研素养之奠定领导力


十年前,科研界所流行的文化是“成败沉浮全凭自己”。但如今,欧美的学术机构也开始投入资源,培养青年科研人员获得职业生涯发展所需的技能,其中,最首要的任务就是领导能力的培养。[2]因为完成一项科研项目往往不能仅凭一己之力,或许很多人在谈到科研这个话题时,首先想到的都是一个人的学术能力是否能够胜任某个项目或课题,但往往被忽略的还有科研学者的领导力。对于青少年学子而言,能够在科研中培养出来的领导力也能帮助他们计划、组织学习和生活中的各项事务。

科研素养之激发创造力


在学术研究中培养的科研素养恰恰能够激发学生的创造力。在一篇关于科研方法的论文中,作者指出:“科学研究没有确定的规则和标准,也没有准确的预期结果。基础研究的意义在于发现未知,解决那些尚不存在答案的问题。研究有时不会按照计划进行,甚至会发现意料之外的问题。在当代研究中,科研问题往往极为复杂,需要越来越多的跨学科合作。”[3]


作者把材料科学作为跨学科创新性研究的例子。材料科学的研究中会涉及化学、生物学、物理、数学以及许多工程类领域,研究团队需要创造性地使用其它学科的知识或研究方法来解决问题。这种复杂的问题要求科研人员可以创造性地结合不同学科领域。[4]


青少年如何参与科研




中国家长素来重视子女的教育,青少年应尽早融入飞速发展的科技大潮中。如何让更多青少年尽早培养科技素养、锤炼创新意识,成为未来中国的国际化创新性人才,是我们必须认真探讨的课题。[5]


其实,所谓的科研并不是一定要和研究员或者学者一样参与高深复杂的科研项目。培养学生科研能力的方式有很多种,可以体现在课程设置、学校科研活动以及针对青少年开放的导师科研项目。





1

 国际学校科研意识培养


国际学校(包括双语、外籍学校)可以说是作为培养高中生科研素养的代表性案例。对于国际学校学子而言,进行科研活动是为了实现留学申请的背景提升,同时,国际学校注重对于学生全方面发展的培养,这也是国际教育独有的教育优势。所以,在课程设置与硬件设施配备上,很多国际学校投入巨大。


许多致力于打造科研特色的国际学校为培养学生的科研能力提供大量支持,下文中节选了部分具有代表性的科研优势名校为案例,展现国际高中科研特色。


华南师范大学附属中学国际部


华南师范大学附属中学国际部此前系2004年广东省教育厅批准成立的华师附中国际基础课程中心,于2009年初正式更名为华南师范大学附属中学国际部,以下简称HFI(华附国际部)。HFI的国际课程教育始于2004年由华南师范大学附属中学与英国北方大学联合会联合开设的一年制IFY英澳预科(2004-2019)。2009年3月,在成功开设IFY英澳预科五年后,经美国大学理事会(College Board)授权批准,HFI开办了华南地区首个AP美式高中[6]



华附国际部则以社团的形式——科学狂人社(简称科狂社),将诸多科学爱好者们齐聚一室。思想于此碰撞,奏出未来的交响。科狂社面向所有同学并且致力于培养每一位成员的科学兴趣与综合科学素养


社团定期举行各类与科学有关的讲座,以及各种各样十分有意思的科学小实验,辅以一些关于实验的报告以记录实验。[7]值得注意的是,对于实验课题的选择,科狂社别有一番心思,多选择与广州人民生活息息相关的实验。由于广州温暖多雨,蚊虫较多,科狂社便以此为题,每月在学校内进行对于白纹伊蚊密度的检测活动,在假期中也会不定期做一些对于广州市个别区域的蚊虫密度检测活动,并且撰写相对应的实验报告。


生活与科学的结合,带领学生们透过现象进一步了解万事万物的本质,使得他们在这一过程中不断修正改进自己的想法,学会思考与主动探索;社团形式的载体,教会了学生们科研不是一个人的独行,合作也是不可缺失的一环。

上海市民办中芯学校


中芯学校是中芯国际集成电路制造有限公司投资兴办的一所十二年一贯制的民办学校。中芯学校国际部极其重视学生科研道路上的初体验。学校在科学硬件方面给予大量投入,按学科分设多类实验室,现已拥有1间生物实验室,1间物理实验室,1间化学实验室,每间实验室又进一步细分成标准化实验室和个性化实验室,后者可以为学生的研究型项目提供有力支持。[8]



中芯学校国际部扮演着学生在科研道路上的领路人,确保学生在日后的科研道路上能够稳健前行。同时,学校注重对于学生科研爱好的培养,每年举办的科学博览会内容丰富多彩。同学们在科学博览会上完成了一系列的科学实验和演示,学校也会举办科学剧场和科学主题的智力竞赛。科技博览会让学生有机会参与科学主题的挑战,旨在激发学生学习科学技术的热情,从而为他们将来从事科研工作打下坚实的基础。[9]

广东顺德德胜学校(国际)


广东顺德德胜学校(国际)简称DSI。DSI于2014年被剑桥评估国际教育(CAIE)认证为剑桥国际学校,提供剑桥国际普通中等教育证书(IGCSE)和剑桥国际AS和A Level课程。2015年,学校获得国际文凭组织的认可,提供国际文凭课程(IBDP)。为了让学生为未来做好更充分的准备,学校启动了一系列计划,以促进全人教育。DSI非常重视学术和以学生为中心的活动,为培养学生成为领导、学者和全球公民做好了充分的准备。[10]

德胜2022科创菁英计划同时开设了人工智能和物联网的冬令营。通过科技体验,课程旨在结合动手实践,为学生们建立信息时代基本科学素养。通过基于项目的学习,同学们将对相关概念有更深的了解,并在实践过程中获得能力提升。在整个科创菁英计划中,德胜引进专业科创导师,培养德胜科创人才,打破学科之间的壁垒,实现科创学科的跨学科联动。[11]

青岛梅尔顿学校


青岛梅尔顿学校前身为青岛二中剑桥国际高中,成立于2000年,是上海学领集团旗下的国际化学校,也是岛城最早从事国际教育的学校之一。

众多国际学校均将科研视为学生良好发展道路上不可或缺之物。不过,科研却不是一门纯粹的课程,科研的意义在于教会学生深度思考,学会解释世界是如何运作的。因此,学生也可以在校外进行科研实践来提升自己的科研能力。

学校外的科研能力提升


除在学校通过课程与硬件获得科研初体验外,学生在校外也能找到更多帮助提升研究能力,思维创新的渠道。除科研能力外,如果拥有科研素养或科研经历,也能获得世界顶尖大学的青睐,因此,也就有很多竞赛类、科研项目类的活动在校外聚集了全国的优秀高中生参与,进行同台竞技。


科研赛事活动


科研赛事能够为学生提升背景,因而,很多老师与家长鼓励学生参加科研竞赛的初衷都是为了使其拥有获奖证书与证明,从而拥有获得名校青睐的机会。但其实科研竞赛的经历才能真正让学生在学术能力上“羽翼渐丰化鸿鹄,腾翔苍穹展宏图”


在众多提升科研能力的竞赛中,全球华人学生均耳熟能详的当属丘成桐中学科学竞赛该竞赛之所以被世界名校认可为高含金量的赛事,正是因为在竞赛过程中注重对于青少年科研能力的考验。在组队后协调分工、时间管理与资源分配的过程中,学生能够展现自身的统筹能力与领导力。在实验设计和论文写作中,学生能够展现自身科研能力与创新能力。从准备到参赛的整个过程对于高中生而言是一个最好的促进科研能力提升的机会。鼓励学生参加诸如此类的竞赛不仅是为实现获奖加分,更是为了能够让学生全方面的锻炼科研能力,提升科研素养。  


诸如此类全面锻炼学生科研能力的还有启动于2021年的全球院士论坛的论文征集活动,该活动是科研赛事新秀,与一些老牌科研赛事相比,这类论坛类的科研活动赋予了学生更大的创造空间。学生们根据研究兴趣开题并形成、提交论文,可以体会到自己独立完成科研过程的乐趣。不仅如此,全国范围的优秀学生论文还将有机会被世界顶尖名校的教授批阅和评级,获得指导建议。


很多学生在研究自己感兴趣的课题中,感受到了与为了竞赛或完成学习任务完全不同的乐趣,同时,得到顶尖教授的认可也有利于青少年提升未来参与科研的信心。


导师科研项目


随着社会和学校对科研与创新的日益重视,除了参与科研活动、参赛竞技,权威的导师一起完成科研也已成为优秀青少年提升科研能力的路径之一。国家越来越注重“素质教育”,科研教育也是素质教育的重要组成。导师引领的科研项目不同于综合性学习,目的性相对较弱,也不同于竞赛类的导向性。这种科研项目给予学生有创造力和挑战性的科研学习经历,个性化的科研项目也是难能可贵的能力培养途径之一。虽然现在国际学校对科研能力培养的投入和精力不容小觑,但不可忽视的名校师资力量才是拔高优秀学生科研能力的“筹码”。


顶尖的师资使科研高度与含金量提升,带给一个优秀学生的发展也是没有“天花板”的。资源分享难能可贵,当校园内的佼佼者被已经掌握的书本知识禁锢住的时候,大牛导师带给优秀学生的视野提升才是质的飞跃。优秀的高中生可能通过校内外的科研活动提升了学术能力,其中有的学生已经有能力完成一篇独立撰写的学生论文。但有影响力的导师带领的科研项目能让资源有限的高中生接触到全球最前沿的科研资源,这种方式培养的不仅仅是学生对科研素养的追求,更是可以坚定学生对科研道路的追求。


小结


科研经历能够让青少年提升科研兴趣、培养科研素养、助力未来发展。科技创新是社会发展的动力,青少年作为最富活力、最具创造性的群体,理应走在创新创造的前列,做锐意进取、开拓创新的时代先锋。

 

提升青少年科研能力在高中教育中已成必然趋势。高中阶段是人才培养的重要阶段,因此,需要让学生在高中阶段形成正确积极的科研态度,发展良好的科研素养并培养优秀扎实的科研技能;让科研经历助力学生升学和长远发展,吸引更多优质、有潜力的学生,为高等学府输送更多有科研素养的人才,提高学校整体竞争力。科技和人才竞争日趋激烈,对科学知识和优秀人才的需要比以往任何时候都更为迫切。作为具有基础性、先导性、全局性地位和作用的教育,需能跟上时代的脚步,推动社会发展的车轮滚滚向前。[15]

On April 30th, 2022, KingLead and Huafu International Department (HFI) jointly released the "2021 Research Report on Characteristics of Scientific Research of International High Schools".


Report Highlights


This report includes three chapters: the significance of scientific research literacy to high school students, how young people can participate in scientific research, and the 2022 KingLead International School Characteristics Ranking - Scientific Research Featured School Display. 


The report takes China's international high schools as the research object, discusses the background and training path of scientific research ability, and analyzes the scientific research literacy and ability training methods of Chinese international schools by taking the famous international schools with scientific research characteristics in China as examples, aiming to promote the upgrading of China's international education and promote the scientific and characteristic development of China's international schools by sharing the experience of running schools with scientific research advantages.


Huafu International Department (HFI)


Huafu International Department (HFI), formerly known as the International Foundation Year Center of the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University,  opened the first AP American high school in South China with the authorization and approval of the College Board.


With a new vision of international talent training, HFI organically integrates Chinese and foreign advanced teaching models, teaching methods and courses, and has built a high-quality curriculum system, teaching model and evaluation system with its own characteristics. The advantages in mathematics, physics and chemistry ensure that students inherit Chinese culture; on the other hand, it can better meet the training needs of overseas elite higher education systems for professional knowledge, personal ability, and humanistic accomplishment, which has been highly regarded by universities at home and abroad. 


HFI focuses on the cultivation of students' scientific research literacy and ability. The school guides students to explore scientific research fields and explore scientific research capabilities from courses, activities and other aspects. The students of the school have achieved excellent results in a number of scientific research competitions in recent years. Among them, in The Global Academician Forum and Youth Scientific Research Forum held by KingLead, 14 HFI students won the special prize and the first, second and third prizes respectively. The Significance of Scientific Research

 Literacy to High School Students




Although it’s not necessary for every student to specialize in scientific and technological research and become a scientist in a certain field, not becoming a scientist does not mean that he does not need to have scientific research literacy. The cultivation of scientific research literacy is particularly important for students, especially high school students in the period of connecting higher education.

Learn to think deeply


Einstein says: "Learning knowledge should be good at thinking, thinking and rethinking. That's how I became a scientist." Students' scientific inquiry ability is closely related to the depth of their scientific thinking. The famous German playwright Goethe says"Whoever does not think with his head will end up with nothing but feeling." World-renowned scientists and writers have formed their own reinterpretation of knowledge through thinking, and then formed new creations and knowledge systems.[1]


When many high school students apply for foreign universities, they may find that the interviewer pays great attention to scientific research experience during the interview process. But they don't know that the interviewer never valued scientific research experience, but scientific research thinking. In other words, the application is not about scientific research experience, but about in-depth thinking, research and application at the bottom. That is to say, spelling is a kind of thinking process and depth of understanding of the problem. This is why Project-Based Learning (PBL) has taken the world by storm. The Kinglead's article What Should A "High-level" PBL Do? mentioned that in the process of project-based learning, students have ample opportunities to revise, reflect, and improve their ideas. They learn to think like historians and learn to build scientific models to explain how the world works.[1]


For high school students, the best way to learn in the first place is not to endorse and try, but to invest in the practice of project-based learning and to set aside time for deep thinking.[1]

Lay leadership


Ten years ago, the prevailing culture in the scientific research community was that "success or failure is up to you". But now, academic institutions in Europe and the United States have also begun to invest resources to train young researchers to acquire the skills needed for career development, and the first task is to develop leadership skills.[2]Because it is often impossible to complete a scientific research project by oneself, perhaps when many people talk about the topic of scientific research, the first thing that comes to mind is whether a person's academic ability is competent for a certain project or topic, but what is often overlooked is the research scholars leadership. Then for young students, the leadership that can be cultivated in scientific research can also help students plan, organize learning and various affairs in life.

 Inspire creativity


The research literacy cultivated in academic research can stimulate the creativity of students. In a paper on research methods, the authors point out, "Scientific research has no established rules and standards, and no precise expected results. The point of basic research is to discover the unknown and solve problems for which no answers exist. Research sometimes does not go according to plan, and even unexpected problems will be discovered. In contemporary research, scientific questions are often extremely complex and require more and more interdisciplinary collaboration. "[3]


The author takes materials science as an example of innovative interdisciplinary research. Research in materials science will involve chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and many engineering fields, and research teams need to creatively use knowledge or research from other disciplines or methods to solve problems. Such complex problems require researchers to creatively combine different disciplines.[4]


How Teenagers can Get Involved 

in Scientific Research




Chinese parents have always attached great importance to their children's education, and young people should integrate into the rapid development of science and technology as soon as possible. How to enable more young people to cultivate scientific and technological literacy, temper their innovative consciousness as soon as possible, and become China's international innovative talents in the future is a topic that we must take seriously.[5]


In fact, the so-called scientific research does not necessarily have to participate in advanced and complex scientific research projects like researchers or scholars. There are many ways to train students in scientific research, which can be reflected in the curriculum setting, the exercise in the school's scientific research activities, and there are also many mentor research projects open to young people.

Cultivation of Scientific Research 

Awareness in International Schools


International schools (including bilingual schools and schools for children of foreign personnel) can be regarded as representative cases of cultivating high school students' scientific research literacy. This is not only because the students of these schools do scientific research activities to improve the background of studying abroad, but also because of the educational advantages that students focus on in all aspects under non-traditional education. Therefore, many international schools spend a lot of energy on cultivating students' scientific research awareness in curriculum setting and hardware facilities.


Many international schools with scientific research features also provide a lot of support for cultivating students' scientific research ability. The following excerpts select some international schools with representative scientific research characteristics as cases to demonstrate the scientific research characteristics of international high schools.

Huafu International Department (HFI), formerly known as the International Foundation Year Center of the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University, was officially renamed as the International Department of the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University (HFI) in early 2009. HFI's international curriculum education began in 2004 with the one-year IFY Anglo-Australian Foundation Year (2004-2019), jointly offered by High School Affiliated to South China Normal University and the Northern Consortium. In March 2009, five years after the successful opening of IFY, HFI opened the first AP American high school in South China with the authorization and approval of the College Board.[6]



HFI brings together many science enthusiasts in the form of a club, the Mad Scientist Club. This is where ideas collide to create the symphony of the future. The club is open to all students and is dedicated to developing the scientific interests and comprehensive scientific literacy of each member. 


The club holds regular science-related lectures and a variety of interesting science experiments, supplemented by reports on the experiments to document them.[7] It is noteworthy that the club has a special idea for the choice of experimental topics. It chooses experiments that are closely related to the life of the Guangzhou people. As Guangzhou is warm and rainy, mosquitoes are more common, so the club conducts a monthly survey on the density of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in the school, and also does some surveys on the density of mosquitoes in some areas of Guangzhou during holidays, and writes a report on the experiment. 


The combination of life and science leads students to further understand the nature of everything through the phenomenon, so that they can constantly improve their ideas in the process and learn to think and actively explore. Also, the club form teaches students that scientific research is not a solitary endeavor and that cooperation is also an indispensable part.

Shanghai SMIC Private School


Shanghai SMIC Private School is a Pre-kindergarten-Grade 12 school invested and established by the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC Shanghai). The International Department of SMIC attaches great importance to the first experience of students on the road of scientific research. The school has invested a lot in the hardware of science laboratories, and divided into multiple types of laboratories according to disciplines. Now it has 1 biology laboratory, 1 physics laboratory, and 1 chemical laboratory. Each laboratory is further subdivided into standardized laboratories and personalized laboratories, the latter of which can provide strong support for students' research projects.[8]



SMIC acts as the leader of students on the road of scientific research, ensuring that students can move forward steadily on the road of scientific research in the future. At the same time, the school pays attention to the cultivation of students' scientific research interests, and the content of the science fair held every year is rich and colorful. The students completed a series of science experiments and demonstrations at the Science Fair. SMIC also held science theatre and science-themed quizzes. Science and technology fairs give students the opportunity to participate in science-themed challenges, aiming to stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning science and technology, so as to lay a solid foundation for their future research work. [9]

Desheng School (International)


Guangdong Shunde Desheng School (International) is abbreviated as DSI. DSI was accredited by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) as a Cambridge International School in 2014, offering the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the Cambridge International AS and A Level programs. In 2015, the school was accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). In order to better prepare students for the future, the school has initiated a number of programs to promote holistic education. Milton International School


Milton International School, formerly known as Cambridge International High School of Qingdao No.2 Middle School , was founded in 2000 as an international school under the Shanghai Xueling Group, and was one of the first schools in Qingdao to engage in international education.
