Winter Paralympic Games

Winter Paralympic Games

Winter Paralympic Games

The Meaning of Education

Winter Paralympic Games

Hello. I'm Prof. Burke-White, the Richard Perry Professor at the University of Pennsylvania here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It gives me great pleasure to be speaking to you today.

First and most importantly, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to KingLead on everything that you're doing for international schools within China (except Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan). I'm very pleased to have worked with KingLead and to see all of the contributions they are making in this space. I hope, in fact, I know, that the Nobel Innovation Forum will be a great success. I also want to congratulate the international schools on the 2022 list of top schools in China, and to congratulate KingLead and all of the schools on the publication of the research report on international schools.

I know myself, having looked at schools to study at and advise students of where to study, how important rankings like these are to give students and parents and teachers and school administrators a sense of how different schools are doing, the issues on which day they excel, the place where more work needs to be done.

And rankings like that produced by KingLead help give us all a sense of the success of these schools. And I am so pleased to see the number of schools that have done so well in these rankings, and the diversity of those schools, it is a real testament to the hard work of students, parents, teachers, and administrators across the country, that schools have done and performed so well, and that they are educating students to be the leaders of tomorrow.

That is, after all, what education is all about. And every school on this ranking is doing just that, educating students to take on the challenges we have today and tomorrow. Of course, we're talking at a moment where the challenges the world's facing are very, very big. They're daunting, and they're exciting.

The opportunities for students in China and around the world today are truly unprecedented, and so too, are the needs that the world has in the business space and the economic space, in the policy space and science and technology, in the humanities. The needs are huge, and these students are stepping up to make a difference in the years ahead. And, you know, there is one area where I think the difference will be most clear that will determine students' ability to truly thrive in the environment that lies ahead, and that is innovation.

2

The Essence of Innovation

Winter Paralympic Games

You know, we can all learn exactly what's written in the books, and will be smart when we do so, but it's learning to think creatively, learning to respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow, that is about innovation. It's about taking everything we've learned in the books, in our science classes and our math classes, in our humanity studies, taking those and applying them to a changing reality.

The world is changing very quickly. New discoveries are happening every day in the sciences, new ideas are being generated, and new challenges are facing us in the policy world. But we must be able to step up to those challenges. We must be able to rise to the new environment that we will inhabit in the years ahead. That is what innovation is all about. You know, the solutions of the past simply won't work in the future, because the problems will be different. The tools at our disposal will be different.

And what sets apart a smart and well-educated student from one who can be truly successful, who can truly thrive, is the ability to innovate, to take an idea and to modify, to apply a new tool set, to think about that problem differently, to be creative in designing a new solution.

Becoming an entrepreneur who solves a challenge in business, or becoming a policy leader who may solve it by working in government or the intersection of government and the private sector, or to be that scientist who applied a new idea and discovered something that no one had seen before, that fundamentally is what innovation is.

Now look, my own work is at the intersection of law and policy, so I spend a lot of my time thinking about issues like climate change, a huge challenge, but we need to innovate to solve it. If we've learned anything in the last 10 or 15 years, we're not going to solve climate change simply by passing a new law or limiting the amount of emissions through an international treaty.

No, we need new ideas. We need new scientific discoveries that will figure out how to capture carbon from the atmosphere and thereby reduce the carbon in the world today. We need new ways of generating electricity, new batteries to store that electricity. All of these are innovations in the sciences that will make a difference to our collective future.

And we need innovations in the policy space. We need new ways for countries to work together, to cooperate with one another and with the private sector. This will require innovation, new ideas, out-of-the-box thinking, trying things that no one has done before, being willing sometimes to fail, because ultimately, we will be successful.

That is innovation in the policy world, and its innovation on an issue that will determine our collective future in the climate space. So too, we need to innovate to figure out how to make us all better off in the future. We're not going to solve climate change simply by saying we're accepting a lower standard of living. Nor are we going to solve climate change by saying that some people can have a lot based on where they live or where they're from, and other people won't be able to um be able to really thrive in the world. We can't have that.

We need innovation that ensures that there is a distribution of wealth and distribution of opportunity around the world. That sort of innovation will take fundamentally the cultivation of innovative talents through our educational system.

3

The Cultivation

of Innovative Talents

Winter Paralympic Games

How do we cultivate the talents that will solve these problems in the future? Will we educate people, but we educate them in new ways? Frankly, we have to innovate around education as well. Every school on this list that KingLead has produced, of top schools in China, is educating through innovation. They're teaching people to think creativity creatively.

To do that, of course, you have to start with basic science, technology, math and the humanities. Students need to be well-founded in these ideas, in these skill sets. But then they need that extra something. And that extra something is fundamentally the willingness to challenge ideas, the willingness to try new things, to take an idea from one place and to apply it somewhere else, to think of a solution that worked on one problem and try it a little differently on another problem. That is what great education is, and that is what will cultivate the innovative talents that we need for today and for tomorrow.

So I want to leave you with one piece of advice, and that is to Chinese teenagers and their families, invest in your education, but invest in an education that trains you to think differently than everyone else, that trains you with different skills, that show you how to apply those skills differently. Be creative. Be innovative. Be willing to challenge ideas, because that is what will make you a creative talent and will allow us to innovate to solve the problems of today and tomorrow.

So once again, my congratulations to KingLead, and particularly my congratulations to every school that has been listed in the Noble Innovation Forum list of top schools.

I'm Burke-White professor, here at the University of Pennsylvania, and I want to thank you for your attention and again, my congratulations. Good Bye. Now.
