James Allan will jump to Jakarta as JLL’s head for Indonesia

Global property brokerage JLL is making a key leadership change in Southeast Asia by naming James Allan as Country Head of its Indonesia business.

Allan, who jointly heads up JLL’s office leasing team in Shanghai with Anny Zhang, starts the new role effective May 1. The executive will be based in Jakarta starting in May and will be joined by his family in June, according to a statement by the NYSE-listed advisory firm. Allan succeeds Todd Lauchlan, who has been tapped to lead JLL’s New Zealand business as managing director after eight years as Country Head of Indonesia.

JLL has over 600 employees across three offices in the world’s fourth most populous nation. The property firm acquired Indonesia’s Procon in 2011 to create one of the country’s leading real estate services firms.

Allan, who worked closely with JLL APAC CEO Anthony Couse when Couse was the consultancy’s Managing Director for Eastern China, has been co-head of the company’s markets division in Shanghai with Zhang since 2015. Zhang will continue to head up JLL’s Markets team in Shanghai following Allan’s departure.

China Property Veteran Picks Up Stakes for SE Asia

“Indonesia continues to be one of our key growth markets in South East Asia,” commented Chris Fossick, JLL’s managing director of Singapore and South East Asia in a statement. “We are fortunate to have a great depth of leadership talent and we are excited to have someone of James’ calibre and experience to drive the next generation of our growth strategy in this dynamic and fast-growing market.”

Allan takes the reins in Jakarta with over 15 years of real estate experience in the UK and China. Hailing from Britain, Allan joined JLL in Shanghai in 2008, and has held a series of increasingly senior roles advising multinational tenants and landlords in Shanghai and Greater China.

The Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has also held a number of strategic leadership functions, including serving on JLL’s East China Executive Board and APAC Tenant Representation Board. He holds a Master of Science (Real Estate) degree from the University of Reading.

Lauchlan Heads Back to New Zealand

Allan’s ascension in Jakarta takes place as Lauchlan departs Indonesia after leading JLL’s team there since 2010. The 20-year industry veteran got his start with Jones Lang Wooton in Wellington, New Zealand in 1995, before the agency merged with LaSalle Partners to form JLL in 1999.

Lauchlan has since been involved in office leasing, investment sales, transactions and management of corporate accounts for JLL in the company’s London, Mumbai, Beijing and New Zealand offices before taking a series of senior roles with Sama Dubai and the Abu Dhabi-based Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC).

After rejoining JLL in Jakarta, Lauchlan grew the Indonesian business more than 800 percent, increasing the headcount from 75 to more than 600.

“JLL has experienced great success in Indonesia under Todd’s leadership over the past eight years, and we would like to thank him for his unwavering focus on our clients and our people,” Fossick said in the statement. “Over the years we have steadily built our presence and talent pool, and today we are proud to be a leading real estate player that has earned the trust of many Indonesian and multinational clients.”

Anny Zhang Takes Over Markets in Shanghai

With Allan on his way to Indonesia, Zhang, a nearly 11-year JLL veteran, will relocate from the company’s Pudong district office to its Eastern China headquarters in Puxi, according to the internal announcement.

“Under his (James Allan’s) and Anny’s leadership, our Shanghai Markets team has done a phenomenal job establishing and maintaining our dominant market leadership position in the commercial office industry in both Shanghai and China,” JLL’s Managing Director for Eastern China, Eddie Ng said in the internal announcement.

As she takes over solo control of JLL’s office leasing team in China’s biggest commercial office market, Zhang will be responsible for the overall operations of the Markets business, which covers office tenant and landlord representation.
