| 学校背景 | 

UCLA（加州大学洛杉矶分校）作为西部建筑院校，其一直保持着先锋建筑院校的特性。在美国整体大背景下，传统建筑学校仍然占据多数，如伊利诺伊理工，圣路易斯华盛顿等，他们的教学方式更接近于国内的建筑院校，强调结构与实际应用。但是近年来美国建筑教育整体的风向一直在变化，其方向类似于AA与UCL，强调新技术与新思想在建筑上的应用。LA作为美国西部最大的城市，它的活跃与开放性也造就了两所优秀的先锋派院校：UCLA与SCI-ARC。与此同时，东部的强势院校也在逐渐转型，美国建筑教育趋势的转变可见一斑。

| OVERVIEW | 

The M.Arch II is a post-professional degree program that leads to aMasters of Architecture II degree. This unique program offers students with aprofessional degree in architecture the opportunity to specialize their skillsand apply architectural design thinking and capabilities to real-worldchallenges outside the field.

The program is located at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design’s IDEAScampus, an incubator for collaborative,  cross-disciplinary design research. Through year-long design research topics (referred to as SUPRASTUDIOS),students and faculty work with partners working in the areas of entertainment,media, technology, and urbanism. Students apply the analytical and designprocesses of architecture and urban design to emerging developments in theseindustries. By engaging with experts from other fields, students have theopportunity to expand architecture’s field of influence and leverage design topropose alternative, more intelligent futures.

The M.Arch.II is a 10-month,  fast-track, 56-credit degree program open tostudents with a NAAB-accredited five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch)degree, a graduate degree in architecture,  or the foreign equivalent.  Theprogram is eligible for the STEM OPT Extension for F-1 visa holders.

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design graduate program is ranked No. 6 in the US in Architectural Record's Top 10 Schools for 2018.

| About the program | 

Led by professors who are experts in their respective fields — ThomMayne,  Greg Lynn,  Jimenez Lai, and Güvenç Özel (2018–19) — students join ateam of educators and industry partners to question,  challenge, and expand thecurrent conventions of architectural practice. 

Each year, the program offers concurrent studios that explore a relevantapplied research theme.  Topics have included strategic thinking,sustainability,  contemporary culture,  lifestyle, autonomous cars, mobility, sensingtechnology, robotics, extreme environments, the journey to outer space, virtualreality,  entertainment production performances,  and media-enhanced experiences.Through intensive research and experimentation, students investigatecontemporary technological inventions, capture opportunities forinterdisciplinary growth, and create new methodologies for architecturaldesign.

STUDIO: ENTERTAINMENT

OVERVIEW

California is home to the largest concentration ofhigh-technology industries in the world and is a global center forentertainment and animation.  The IDEAS Entertainment Studio explores theintersection of the built environment and entertainment,  integratinglarge-scale media,  interactivity and robotics to animate cities,  buildings andspaces. This studio uses narrative and immersive approaches to the design ofenvironments to consider the material expression of popular cultures.

Entertainment Studio——由加拿大籍建筑师Jimenez Lai指导，其他两个指导老师一个来自马德里建筑学院，一个普林斯顿的研究生毕业。Jimenez Lai与夫人拥有自己的工作室Bureau Spectacular（http://bureau-spectacular.net），对于建筑、艺术、理论、电影、漫画叙事，特别是建筑与元现代主义（metamodernism）的融合有极大的研究。Entertainment Studio相对于其他三个studio更加偏向理论和艺术，但做的内容是更靠近建筑，并进行Macro/Micro、Irony/Sincerity、Fiction/Reality的一些探讨。

STUDIO: MOBILITY

OVERVIEW

Mobility is achallenge that will face architects in the future as they move away from thedesign of single buildings to projects which wrestle with the very problematicconditions of the modern environment. The IDEAS Mobility Studio program seeksto identify ways in which architecture and urban design can be part of thesolution rather than part of the problem.   The answer may lie in holisticapproaches to building and infrastructure,  or in a highly specialized buildingcomponent.

关于未来城市，“移动性”绝对是最重要的趋势以及关键词，这也是Mobility的项目名由来。在Mobility做的项目超越传统建筑设计手法，而旨在探究建筑如何与机器结合，适应现代移动科技的发展，乃至走在现有科技之前，为使用者提供更数字化的空间体验。18-19 Mobility studio由Greg Lynn指导，主要课程是studio和techseminar，两门课在每个quarter会分别有不同的主题，但主题之间彼此关联，循序渐进，在课程学习中将会接触到机器路径模拟软件和更前瞻性的空间设计。

STUDIO: URBAN STRATEGY

OVERVIEW

The IDEAS UrbanStrategy Studio is a collaboration with The Now Institute,  an urban research centerat UCLA Architecture and Urban Design.  Founded by Distinguished Professor ThomMayne,  The Now Institute works with cities affected by challenges ofresilience, culture, sustainability, and mobility in places including LosAngeles, New Orleans, Madrid, Beijing, Port-au-Prince, and Cap-Haïtien. Thestudio focuses on the investigation and application of urban strategies forcomplex problems in modern advanced metropolises and informal settlements.

STUDIO: TECHNOLOGY

OVERVIEW

Architecture iscurrently at the cusp of a paradigm shift, where the environments we occupy arebecoming increasingly virtual and mobile. Considered as an ecosystem oftechnologies rather than a tectonic assemblage of materials, architecture isshifting toward a non-static and non-physical form of experience. This opens upthe potential for it to be considered as a transdisciplinary medium that mergesthe worlds of fabrication, gaming and media design. The IDEAS technology studioinvestigates the design of new media in digital and physical forms, and itspotential to radically transform the human experience.

Technology studio在课程设计上偏重于探索建筑与计算机科学的交叉领域，对近年非常热门的机械臂交互、AR/VR/MR、machine learning及信息可视化等课题有相关的课程设计。软件方面要求较高，但即使没有参数化、编程基础，也会有lecture对课程必须的软件技术进行讲解，所以如果对这些建筑交叉领域感兴趣，tech studio不失为一个选择。

| 心得与总结 | 

M.ArchII 作为一个10月左右的项目，从8月份开始一直到第二年的6月份，整个过程基本没有任何拖沓，也几乎不存在延毕的情况。10个月应该是整个北美最短的M.Arch II项目， 且其整体费用只有哥大的一半左右。整体情况上看应该是性价比最高的。

学术上，UCLA作为西海岸名校，其建筑学教育也有长远的历史。在Frank Gehry，Thom Mayne等大师的影响下，它的先锋性与前瞻性应该是无出其右的。从studio的分类即可看出UCLA M.Arch II 更偏重于新型建筑方向的研究与探索，如果你已经厌倦传统的空间探索，无聊的结构打点，转而想探寻建筑学最前沿的技术与思考，那么UCLA会成为你的dream school。M.Arch II整个program分成4个部分，平均一个部分有三个月的学习时间，除了第一个部分外，其余的学期都是跟着各自报名的studio进行学习，只有第一个学期是统一经行软件学习，你不需要担心自己无法适应这种先锋的教育体系，学校在教学的安置非常合理，会带着你慢慢进入，因此不用担心课程上的冲突。与此同时，美国的本科建筑教育也很偏基础，就本科毕业而言，国内学生与美国学生几乎没有任何区别，无论是对建筑意识形态的理解还是整体设计的思维方式，当你在与外国同学交流时并不会有太多的障碍，也很容易形成良好的合作关系。
