Supported by ZIM South China & Hong Kong, the Poster Competition of the Campus Environmental Protection Cultural Festival held by Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) and GTIIT Education Foundation achieved success on December 2.
Based on the theme of "Environmental pollution & countermeasures", ten posters presented research-driven solutions to environmental issues including the treatment of solid waste and atmospheric pollutants, microplastic and bioplastic, concept of sponge city and white pollution. They called on people to pay attention to ecological and environmental issues, and protect the environment with actions.
"Green was a sign of life, but the green fishing net has become an injury and a constraint." Li Leqi from Cohort 2022, hoped to draw people's attention to the living environment of sea creatures by the image of a turtle trapping in a fishing net. Liu Runying's poster focused on vehicle emissions and atmospheric pollution in China. She analyzed the main reasons of air pollution caused by vehicle emissions, and put forward suggestions to improve the situation based on existing policies and regulations. Tan Xingyang from Cohort 2021 used bright colors and vivid elements to paint a marine ecological environment with a jellyfish as the main point. "It took a lot of effort from the research to the poster, but it's worth it. I hope more people will care about the natural environment and protect our earth," said Chen Changyang.
Judges from different GTIIT programs listened to the students' explanations of their works, asked questions about their topic selection, design concept, research results, etc., and evaluated the posters from the aspects of content, appearance, presentation and visual aids. They also gave suggestions to students, which showed the great atmosphere of learning through competition.
"The students showed amazing ideas and creativity in designing posters. I loved the way some students showed artistic talent in scientific themed posters." Varenyam Achal, Professor of GTIIT Environmental Science and Engineering Research Group and Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies, said that posters are mind-guide maps to get a better hold of the subject to raise environmental awareness. The activity helped students to learn more about environmental issues and dilemmas, make a practical connection between environmental protection and their own lives and bring others together to protect the environment. Further, poster-based learning enhanced students' academic performance and develop positive feelings and emotions towards a problem.
Dr. Constance Van Horne praised the students' performance in caring the environment. She said that they had made full use of their knowledge and skills in researching, designing and painting to express their concerns about environmental issues and show their social responsibility for caring the nature.
The result of the Poster Competition will be announced at the Awarding Ceremony on December 5. Let's look forward to the winners!
