Binna Choi(Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons)合作长期研究和策展的项目。

Surplus Space will host a flim screening of Liu Yujia's new work "The Pale View of Hills " on December 22, 2018, and the curator You Mi(currently working as academic staff at Academy of Media Arts Cologne) will be invited to have a conversation with Liu Yujia on her long-term research of "Unmapping Eurasia".

"Unmapping Eurasia" is a research and curatorial project under You Mi with Binna Choi(Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons). Taking an itinerant approach, Unmapping Eurasia evolves as it travels, in ‘movements’, where encounters, studies, discoveries, and speculation over other kinds of movements, institutions, infrastructures, resources, and cultures will take place in collective forms. We (un)map the uses of the term Eurasia, ranging from the historical and present-day schools of Russian Eurasianism to the variegated imaginations of the silk road. And we probe into history, ethnography and archeology of nomadic cosmologies while making connections to contemporary social and artistic practices. All the while, we try to counteract the tendency of exoticisation, be it in the old forms of orientalism and self-orientalisation, or in the new wave of techno-orientalism. Above all, we take Eurasia not just as the matrix of study, but also as the very ethics of studying it. Inspired by Eurasian thinkers and practitioners before us, we embark on physical and metaphysical journeys through Eurasia to explore variations of modes of practices pertaining to Eurasia and also opens up to the wider society, or to paraphrase French anarchist-geographer Élisée Reclus, how can humanity’s collective self-awareness form one body with the planet itself?

About Film <THE PALE VIEW OF HILLS>

LIU Yujia’s latest projects are all related to the “borders” and the regions inhabited by the ethnic minority groups. She often gets her inspiration from conducting long-term research and coming into contact with various people in these areas. In her latest work, THE PALE VIEW OF HILLS (2018), we observe in extreme quietnesss the life of a local woman, through the kind of long takes typical of Chantal Akerman. This approach generates a middle ground between fiction and documentation: we seem to be seeing all the details of this particular woman’s life, but in the meantime her mysterious past is shadowed from us; in other words, the protagonist appears to be “living evidence” and we are witnessing the remains of her history and how it gradually dissolves. The spaces in the film are worthy of particular heed, since they often constitute conflicting relationships: quiet living spaces are contrasted with bustling display spaces, the monochromatic Gobi Desert with polychromatic interiors, and ethnic decor with delocalized public spaces (such as the billiards room and the dance hall). These spatial conflicts compose the rhythm of this extremely quiet video, and suggest a perturbated multiplicity of time here.

About Liu Yujia

Liu Yujia was born in Sichuan Province in 1981. She graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2004 and got her master’s degree in London College of Communication, University of the Arts London in 2009. She currently lives and works in Beijing.Liu Yujia’s recent practice engages with moving image. Her video and films explore the dialectical tension between the documentary reality and fiction, examining the complex and mysterious dimension of subjective experience in different social and political context. Artist shoots the ‘real life’ scenes in a documentary way, meanwhile the privacy and invisible dimension of ‘real life’ could be revealed by her fictional or ‘take’ figures. In this way, she displays a paradox overlap of documentary and fiction-the figures are as if ‘performing themselves’,as J·Bentham puts it,they are the images of themselves. Her recent practice reveals the fictional and illusory aspects of social reality, allowing the audience to experience the reality as a pure fiction.

Her recent solo exhibitions include The Beach, A Fantasy, Tang contemporary art, Beijing, 2017; Vertigo, Tang contemporary art, Beijing, 2016; The Third Man, Shanghai Gallery of Art, Shanghai, 2015; Her recent group shows mainly include New Metallurgists, Julia Stoschek Collection, Dusseldorf, Germany, 2018; After Nature, UCCA DUNE Art Museum, Beidaihe, 2018; Aquatopia, CFCCA, Manchester, UK, 2018; Frontier: Re-assessment of Post- Globalizational Politics, OCAT,Shanghai, 2017; Your Selfie Stick (and You),Lianzhou Photo Museum,Lianzhou, 2017; Why Not Ask Again? -11th Shanghai Biennale, PSA, Shanghai, 2016,etc.
