出生于1927年的亚历克斯·卡茨（Alex Katz, New York）是一位93岁的高龄艺术家。二战之前他与家人搬到纽约皇后区的一个多元化的社区，圣奥尔本斯(St. Albans)。受到充满文艺的家庭熏陶以及高中时的艺术项目，1946年卡茨进入了曼哈顿的库珀联合艺术学校（The Cooper Union Art School）开始学习现代艺术理论和技法，毕业后他在斯科霍根学校（Skowhegan School for painting and sculpture）学习到从生活中汲取灵感，为他日后成为「影响现当代的艺术家」起到了至关重要的作用。2005年，他被授予科尔盖特大学美术荣誉博士学位，这是他继1984年缅因州科尔比学院之后的第二个荣誉博士学位。

卡茨曾说，Skowhegan的这种外光派画法（En plein air painting：外光主义起源于印象派，指直接在日光下作画，回到画室内亦不作出修改）成为了他“将一生贡献于绘画事业”的理由。

区别于传统的艺术表现形式，卡茨的风格则处于抽象与写实之间，用抽象的绘画语言描绘真实的人和物，他在画面上呈现的便是他的风格。正如卡茨在与Tate的采访（复制链接至浏览器即可观看https://youtu.be/yHFLJ1qrVAA）中所述，他的画和莫奈（Claude Monet）的作品一样「仿佛是被提前安排好的」，借鉴了伦勃朗（Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn，1606-1669）作品中灵巧的构图，再加上当代的元素，就是他呈现出的作品。画的表面就是一切，在实际的画面上覆盖新的层次使画面变得不一样，这是他较为主要的创作方式。卡茨的画作色彩明快、大胆，也展现了现代美国人对肖像画、风景画和静物画的看法。

谈到艺术家的爱情，一定少不了卡茨和他的挚爱、缪斯和妻子——艾达·卡茨（Ada Katz）。1957年，他们在朋友的纽约画廊的开幕夜上相遇，从此卡茨便画了妻子60年。他是这样形容艾达的：“她是一个经典的美国女性” 他站在妻子的肖像旁说道，“她也是一个欧洲美人”。

从艾达穿着精致的黑色小礼服的各种姿态 (The Black Dress, 1960) 到撑着蓝色雨伞的经典作品（Blue Umbrella, 1972），再到已有屡屡白发的艾达红唇微笑（Big Red Smile，1995），卡茨为这位他认为永远无法呈现出她全部美貌的妻子画了超过200幅作品，他的缪斯也陪伴他走过不同时期的风格突破。

在卡茨长达70余年的创作生涯中，他用尽可能少的颜色描绘出他感受到的事物。他的作品主要围绕肖像（portrait）、风景（landscape）和其他艺术项目展开。卡茨拥有强烈视觉冲击的平涂画面让人一眼就能记住他的作品，所以他的作品不会被打上各种流派的标签，他的风格就是他的画所呈现的一切，是他特立独行的标志。唯一可以被打上的标签就是“Alex Katz”，而他走过的93个春秋的艺术生涯，一直都随着变化无常的时代而改变着。

肖像｜Portrait

“挚爱缪斯”

色彩简约、画面明快、独具美国风格的肖像画，是亚历克斯·卡茨的标志风格。20世纪50年代，卡茨尝试在风景画中拼贴人物，随后决定在绘画中更多地尝试现实主义，开始画他身边的朋友，尤其是妻子和女性肖像，并使用后来成为他作品标志性特征的单色背景进行人物肖像画的创作。

抛开原本现实世界中繁杂的背景，卡茨更喜欢在绘画的纯色背景上使用极少颜色突出展现人物的细节和神态，他的每一幅作品信息中也都会写出使用了几种颜色。抽象大色块与具象主题相融合，他的画看起来简单又不失深度。他作品中的人物表情往往都是冷静的，这正是卡茨从极简中刻意回避任何心理或叙事内容，代之以优雅浮华。

1959年，卡茨开始大量创作彩绘人像——起先在切割的木头上作画，之后转向铝板，并且延续了整个创作生涯。60年代早期，受到电影、电视和广告的影响，将影像中「新的意象」注入绘画这种「旧的形式」中，卡茨开始大型油画和版画的创作，并在后来制作了许多版本的平版、蚀刻、丝网印刷、木刻和油毡版。1964年以后，卡茨越来越多地成组描绘画家、诗人、评论家和周围的朋友等不同身份的人物。

自2010年起，卡茨对个人肖像进行更大程度的裁剪，实际上重新建构了他的主题。他开始在一副画中使用多个紧密裁剪的图像，并将它们在画布上排列，类似于幻灯片，但没有时间变化的呈现创造出一种环境肖像（environmental portrait）的印象。像定格动画一样，观众能从这些作品中看到在人物在同一时空中不停变化的状态。

“环境观念”

上世纪80和90年代，卡茨将大部分注意力集中在大型风景画上，并将其描述为“环境（environment）”，不是从远处观察一个场景，而是观众感觉被自然包围。他以“一种景观想法，一种观念（an idea of the landscape, a conception）”进行每一次创作。1986年，卡茨创作了一系列夜间风景。与之前的阳光景观不同，他开始探索一种「新的光线」。

彩色电影中有很多极端的特写镜头，卡茨的作品受到这种拍摄方式的影响而探索出了画面的截图效果，仿佛是按下快门的瞬间和一个镜头的定格。他注重对光线的捕捉，曾说“只要给我一束不一样的光，我便能创作不同的颜色。人们常说我用色独特，其实并不然，我只是单纯地记录光影而已。”这也是他称自己为“快画家”的缘由。

卡茨的作品中经常出现光线穿过树枝——剪影风格的主题变化，继在“现在时”的风景中寻找更加广阔和精致的光线，他还在捕获“快速略过的光”。新千年伊始，卡茨开始绘画大量花朵，延续了20世纪60年代画布上的花朵探索。最近，他开始使用iPhone拍摄照片，并将其压平，使之成为一个景色的2D记忆，并通过绘画的方式向其注入深度。

“艺术合作”

20世纪60年代初，他为编舞家保罗·泰勒(Paul Taylor)设计布景和服装。多年来，他为舞者画了很多肖像。20世纪80年代，卡茨在他的作品中采用了一个新的主题:穿着设计师服装的时装模特。2010年，他又回到了这个主题，为纽约舞场的主角们画了肖像。

卡茨在《虚构的符号》(Invented Symbols)一书中描述了这次合作经历：“我在与诗人埃德温·登比(Edwin Denby)见面之后，第一次看到了保罗的舞蹈，我觉得他的编舞是我作为艺术家见过的最令人惊讶的事情之一。保罗的舞蹈似乎与上一代人的舞蹈截然不同：没有表情，没有内容，没有形式，但就像他说的那样，他拥有高超的技巧和智慧。”

据卡茨回忆所述，当时电子灯开始在纽约舞蹈领域流行起来，他在作画时将光线塑造出的人物立体感变成平面，用白光和柔和的颜色平衡画面，而保罗愿意尝试这种有点激进的做法。

1977年，卡茨曾被邀请在纽约时代广场创作一个大型广告牌作品。基于卡茨在生活中进行的一项研究，这个公共艺术将23个不同女性的头像围绕在一栋建筑的顶上，每个肖像都有20英尺高，广告牌沿着RKO大楼的两侧延伸了247英尺长，位于60英尺高的三层塔楼上。卡茨曾在采访中提到，他想画一幅能打败广告牌的画，它的效果比广告牌更强。

2010年，出租车顶级广告公司Show Media与非盈利艺术制作基金(Art Production Fund)合作，赞助了一个名为“Art add”的项目——在纽约市的黄色出租车上展示艺术品，而不是广告。卡茨是当时被邀请参与这个项目的三位纽约艺术家之一，他将他的作品制作成蒙太奇（Montage在法语中意为“剪接”，后被发展成一种电影中镜头组合的理论），在大约160辆出租车的顶部进行复制。上图这张照片是一位女性的正面和背面照片，长14 x 48英寸。这次项目的受众人数当时估计有500万。

为了纪念艺术家第三次在该美术馆的展览，卡茨带来了一个很少展出的完整系列作品——他的剪贴装置。这些作品作为肖像画的同时又作为独立浮雕而存在，展示了艺术家突破维度的创作新方向，每幅肖像的背景都被切除了，仅用剪纸雕塑突出了他标志性的风格。

卡茨的第一个剪贴作品非常偶然地创作于1959年的一个平常日子，当时他对自己正在创作的肖像构图不满意，于是便把画的中心人物剪下来，想看看它粘在另一块画布上怎么样。

通过将人物从预先的画布上移动，使它成为一个三维的物体存在于空间中，卡茨第一次认识到他的作品可以被如此体验。这种突破二维的解放的可能性让卡茨感到兴奋，于是他在20世纪60年代继续创作剪贴装置，并从木质底座转向铝制。

本次展出的15件新作是第一批卡茨十年来创作的重要剪贴装置作品，展示了独立和组合的人物，蒙太奇式的特写镜头、戏剧的视角和框架都对卡茨在雕塑作品中运用的呈现手法产生了特殊且深刻影响。通过省略、放大、重复和裁剪，卡茨将绘画语言发挥到极致，并再现了电影的即时性和亲切感。

卡茨曾说过，雕塑“应该是关于光和运动的”，在这组作品中他完全做到了这一点。这些作品本身散发出一种无关物质层面重量的优雅，所呈现的一种溶解形式无限浸漫了周围空间。

泰勒画廊Timothy Taylor于2018年底推出了卡茨的新作——“可口可乐女孩”。红色背景和身着白色连体泳衣的少女不难让人想起可口可乐配色，画中的舞者使人想起有曲线美的可口可乐瓶。

卡茨解释说：“背景颜色是可口可乐红，这是可口可乐公司50年代的户外标识。”在电视广告般的背景下，描绘这些人物的大型广告牌对美国城市景观的视觉语言产生了重大影响。“广告牌有一种近乎天真的简洁，一切都漂亮光鲜，我喜欢广告牌的感觉。”

从19世纪90年代到20世纪60年代，「可口可乐女孩」是公司广告的主要组成部分，也是美国女性的理想形象。最初，可口可乐的女孩们是保守和端庄的，而在战时，可口可乐广告贯穿了整个海报时代，这些女孩形象也演变为身着制服、充满活力、无忧无虑、悠闲自在的女性形象。

这些新作品中的人物展现了类似芭蕾舞蹈的姿态动作，卡茨通过使用“特写镜头”的构图描绘这些动作的细节，将“稍纵即逝”的瞬间记录下来，形成一种动态的序列。
