nostalgia 是瑞士学者J. Hofer于1688年从德语 Heimweh （思乡病）意译过来的一个医学术语，由希腊词 nostos （回家）与algia （痛苦）结合构成而来。该词于18世纪开始在英语中流行。在美国独立战争期间，许多英国人因长期远离家乡得了忧郁症，英国医师卡伦博士（William Cullen）便将这种病称作 nostalgia，意即“思乡病”或“怀乡病”。

到了第一次世界大战之后，nostalgia 又被赋予“怀旧”或“念旧”之义，直到今天。而“思乡病”这个原义却用的不多，可能是不喜欢这个难记的单词，转而多用 homesickness 表示。
