Fret 一词源自原始日耳曼语复合词 fra-etan （吃光），在古英语时期写作 fretan 原指“吞食”，后来可能是因为与古法语 froter （摩擦、擦拭、击打、抽打）的盎格鲁法语读音相似，就也被用来表示“因摩擦或刮擦而逐渐磨损”某物，比如：

• 风擦着那幢阴森的建筑物的屋檐吹过。
  The wind is fretting along the eaves of the grim architecture.

风擦着建筑物的屋檐吹过时一般可能看不出什么，只会发出呼呼的风声，但风要是擦着水面吹过，则会“使（水体）起波纹”，而流动的水体在地表面还会“（经侵蚀）形成某种通道”，这两个含义都可以用 fret 表达，比如：
