Chinese Director Feng: Awful Audiences Nurture Terrible Movies

Chauncey Diaz

Chinese director Feng Xiaogang became the topic of the China recently over his questionable remarks on Chinese audiences.

On Jun. 18th, Feng made an extremely controversial over the Chinese movie market while attending the Shanghai International Film Festival. When asked about his view on the sub-standard movies which are prevalent on the Chinese market, his answers were truly shocking. Feng blames the creation of sub-standard movies to the sub-standard Chinese audiences. "Junk-style movies are made because there are junk-style audiences in China, and frankly there are a lot of them." said Feng, who did not see the movie producers and directors as the side to blame.

A video is presented here in Chinese:

"If you do not support those terrible movies, they will not have spaces to live." Feng argues, "Ironically, those trashy movies are often extremely lucrative, just because of the awful audiences are still watching them".

Feng calls the directors to treat films audiences as "opponents", showing them the respect that they deserve to have. Yet Feng made it clear that there are two kinds of respects: Respecting the feelings of the audiences, and respecting the money inside the audiences pockets.

From the short clips published, over the two-minute speech, Feng acknowledged the current market-driven Chinese movie-industry. The dilemma between movie quality and profitability seems to be a tough balance to find.

Everything is market-driven, yet professionals all have ethics to follow

It is hard to argue that Feng is attempting to evade responsibilities. Chinese state media, The People's Daily, urged Feng to not criticize the audiences over movie quality and to focus more on high-quality movie productions.

Other Chinese medias refuted Feng's arguments. Audiences are paying to watch their beloved actors in the movie, rather than the awful movie that is there.

In the world of business, the movie industry is evidently profit-seeking oriented and market-driven directed. It is hard to oppose the true facts in the world of capitalism. And also, it is unreasonable and irrational to believe in the old socialism myths, where people are working for fame rather than profits.

Yet it is important to acknowledge the existing ethics and code of conducts in the movie industries. Deliberately creating an awful movie to "cheat" the audiences is certainly unethical and should be discouraged.

Just as reporters have their ethics to report the truth, judges have to abide their ethics to remain fair and unbiased, and doctors have their ethics to not receive bribery. The directors also need to follow their ethics. Just as Feng said: to treat audiences with respect.
