An Ancient Roman Arena (and other seven poems)
There are but Roman columns, statues and broken walls left
On the vacant arena. Some say
Those nobles, ladies, gladiators and thunderous roars
Have been blown away by the wind
And then buried in time
I interrogate the wind
“How could the frail me possess such power?” It asks me in reply
I interrogate time
“I had tried to bury slaughter
But I ended up wounded all over by it.” Such is its response
Looking around the arena, I find
The veils standing out on the silent rocks
Are the howls of the gladiators in bloody fights
Those now lonesome statues
Are the nobles and ladies
Missing the bygone glories while reclining on the ancient times
The lush and huge loneliness
Is swaying in the flustering vast void
Producing sounds of bones striking bones
The Slight Opening in the Door
A breath of wind squeezes in
A beam of light squeezes in
A chirp of the bird squeezes in
A patch of green squeezes in
A glimmer of skies squeezes in
All come to keep company the man quarantined
He is no longer lonely
The darkness and horror haunting his heart
Goes away sensibly
He regains happiness, hope
And the whole world
Forlorn and Empty
After the autumn equinox
Rice in the paddies gets fuller and golden day by day
My father in the paddies are just like the rice
Bending his back, with his coarse hands
He caresses another group of his “children”
In the sunset glow, his intoxicated face
Is beaming with golden fragrance of bumper harvest
The autumn equinox again
Still the scene of bumper harvest in the fields
I try to retrieve in the well of memories
The happy image of my father
The blurring memories
Are like the fields where the crops have been reaped
So forlorn, so empty
My Grass-like Father
Then, My father, like grass
Spent much time weeding
In the fields
With a plough, a hoe, or his hands
Sometimes even with his feet
The weeds, like a willful kid
Grow away, endlessly
Now, my father, with his grass-like body
Feeds the grass over the grave
Making it so lush
When facing the grass-covered grave
I am often close to tears
My Asthmatic Mother
In those hardest days
My mother had to do with spoiled preserved tofu during her lying-in
That explained why she developed asthma
My mother, violently coughing
Turns herself into a leaf fluttering in winds
And her days into sand dunes, high and low
Now, it has been forty-three years since the leaf of my mother fell
But I still often hear her, who leans on my times
Cough
Darkness Turns Time into a Cat
When darkness sneaks here
Time turns into a cat
That is not so excited as it is in the crowding sunlight
Nor does it runs to and fro
It becomes quiet and docile
Walking without a sound
More often, it likes to squint its eyes
Huddle up and doze in the embrace of darkness
Mewing sporadically like stars
It occasionally cocks its ears in dozing
And opens wide its eyes darker than the darkness
To guard the cozy tranquility
Walden
The sky is azure
And the lake lucid
The sky falls into the mirror
That embraces the sky
Breezes brushing the lake occasionally take a stroll
The fish are picking food at leisure, so carefree
Weeds and fruits gently sway in the water
All the grace, contentment and freedom
Owe to the broad and limpid mind of the sky and Walden
By the lake, an old man named Thoreau
With its thought more lucid than the lake water
Illuminates humanity
There Is No One Atop the Mountain
There is no one atop the mountain
Only a hospitable pine tree stand there
Sporadically visited by rains or winds
The sun sometimes drops in
It is coldness that stays with it the longest
Darkness comes every night
Sometimes accompanied by the stars or the moon
People all gaze up at the mountain top
Though knowing that coldness is unbearable there
They still try to climb up
In the belief that
As long as they make it there
All the others will be below their feet
So they climb on and on
Pulling, shoving and kicking each other
Naturally, there is no one atop the mountain
But there is an eagle atop the mountain
For it has wings and feathers for warmth
Most importantly
It comes and goes alone
It alights there just for a brief break
In its mind there is only the sky of freedom
