[Israel]Edna Aphek
For He Will Come (and other three poems)
Not as a pugilist
So as not to mar my face,
So that it will be whole when Ezekiel arrives.
Not as Don Quixote
So I would not be borne by the breeze
When the bone -gatherers come.
Not as Harlequin
So I will not wear a mask
When the truth seekers come.
Not as thunder that might rip my skin drums
So I will not hear the cry of the Phoenix
When it rises from the ashes.
May he come as soft fog,
As light drizzle that gently unties my pains one -by -one .
Death, My Death
Put your hand in mine
I’m yours and now, you’re mine.
(Translated from the Hebrew by Daniel Mayer)
Out of the Closet
When my mother died
My father’s attire came
Out of the closet
Forty suits each per year of
Her widowhood
Kept her safe
From life.
Black and brown his footwear
Leaped out of the closet
Soiled with
The dew of my tears.
Outcast
The nakedness of this tree smites me:
Is this the tree for which we were cast out?
Its leaves lie on the soil.
The weeping of my aging body.
Sundown
Sundowns are lovely.
The day breaks tomorrow.
Mortal sundown
Isn't lovely at all.
Without any passion
No day shall break
(if ever it did).
I’ve no love for decay,
for excretions,
for odor.
I’ve no love for this sundown.
Were I a sun-starlet,
A tiny wee sun-chip,
A slight inkling twinkling,
I'd wish:
A dip into depths,
But a bit
Different.
