Jiang Yimao [Chongqing]

On Shifangjie (group poems)

Having lodged here for over ten years

Never have I traced the origin of Shifangjie

Ethereal and mysterious is the Heavenly Palace

But here the Heavenly Palace Park

Is adjacent to Shifangjie Community

Roaming long in the park

One may mistake it for woods amid a city

The wind here seems similar

In color and shape

To the wind blowing in the woods behind the old house

In the serene sunshine

The striking huge rock of Yuan Hill

Is still reclining

Flowers and trees greet each other

Sharing the harmony here

Winds from various directions

Pushing and tearing each other

Reeds cluster around

Clouds overhead leisurely float away

Embracing myself

I stroll habitually into the bamboo grove

Arrival

The locust tree outside the window

In bathed in the snow and frost in the depths of winter

Have been silent for days

The dense leaves capping it

Gradually turn yellow

The arrival of a few birds

Dilutes the loneliness of its soul

Their crispy chirping

Seems recalling the cool shade in midsummer

And relating the sadness of the fluttering leaves

Gazing

At the bare head of the tree

I, holding back the words

Fall into philosophical thinking in the narrow sense

Verses will be stored in my mind

Before blooming in the coming spring

Fluttering Flowers of the Locust Tree

Quietly, the locust tree is blooming

With snow white dotting tender green

Learning that, a few birds come and alight

Gracefully chatting among the branches

The petals held in their beaks

Look like hanging masks

Standing before the window

I peep at all this

Conscious of my presence

They hastily swallow the “masks”

An unexpected gust of wind

Sneaks into the dark night

And riots outside the tightly shut window

To herald the downpour

Such a prelude

Takes away the treeful of pure white

Cutting short the distance of petals falling into soil

The birds bitterly chirp while men sigh, so helpless

A new cycle begins

Missing the Poplar Trees

The Yangtze River billows day and night

With the green mountains lining it serenely

The poplar woods steeped in twilight

Are surging from the vast desert

Disregarding the hovering wind and sand

I stroll freely in the woods

To gaze up, caress, embrace

And read the stems and roots, to daydream...

Suddenly, I catch sight of my parents

Standing by the old courtyard

Yearning for their children

To come back for the dinner of the lunar New Year Eve

That Bird

At the height of the Jiangcheng Peninsula

Verdure prevails

For all flower fragrance has faded away

There are still birds billing and cooing

That bird, seeming familiar to me

Ordinary, stubborn, persistent

Frequents the window, peeping and chirping

Gazing, nodding, and fluttering

Have become the standard ritual

The encounter at the slope of Zhaomu Hill

Stuns me

The sight of its flying across the two rivers

Deciphers the code already in my mind

Deepening the tacit understanding between us

The locust tree outside the window at Shifangjie

Cannot compose verses that will never fade

The appearing and disappearing of the bird

And its eagerness

Often get my tearful eyes blurred

The Nest

That nest

Is positioned on the forking branch near the tree top

Roughly the height of the fourth-floor window sill

With a distance of less than three meters

The mutual trust

Can be clearly seen

The nest hidden in the leaves

Once held romance and mission

The fully fledged birds

Have flown apart, not yet to return

Amid the bare branches

The nest, now shaking strikingly in frosty wind

Is just like my old house

Shabby and leaking
