Germany’s railway operator has said sabotage caused massive disruption to services on Saturday, in a sign of how vulnerable critical infrastructure in Europe’s largest economy is to attack.

Deutsche Bahn said it was forced to suspend services in northern Germany on Saturday morning for about three hours “due to sabotage on cables that are indispensable for rail traffic”.

Thousands of passengers were left stranded as their trains to cities including Berlin, Hamburg and Hanover were cancelled, with long queues forming at rail information desks and ticket counters.

A mood of mounting economic pessimism is taking hold across the world’s major economies, as soaring prices and geopolitical uncertainty damage the prospects of businesses and consumers.

In the past year consumer and business confidence has fallen by the most in a decade, with the exception of the initial months of the coronavirus pandemic, according to research for the FT.

Hard economic data and leading financial indicators are also falling from strong levels after Covid-19, signalling that momentum in the world economy is stalling, the latest twice-yearly Brookings-FT tracking index showed.

Fintechs in the UK have accused credit card issuers including NatWest and Barclays of “costing consumers millions” by not giving full access to their own data.

“Britain’s 14.5mn interest-paying cardholders [are] losing millions, if not billions, of pounds a year, at a time when their finances are already crippled by the cost of living crisis,” said Gavin Shuker, chief executive of credit card management start-up Cardeo, in a letter to City minister Andrew Griffith sent last week.

The letter reflects frustration among some fintechs who argue that if consumers were able to share their full financial data with them, they could better offer money-saving services including personalised spending insights, ways to manage credit card debt and cheaper payment methods.

Leading electric bike maker VanMoof is betting that the cost of living crisis will push more consumers to buy its products instead of cars, sounding a rare positive note as soaring inflation weighs on businesses globally.

Co-chief executive Ties Carlier said that the Dutch manufacturer was targeting more city commuters as high fuel costs and the continuing squeeze on consumers’ wallets force many to look for cheaper alternatives to cars and public transport.

Although VanMoof has had to pass some inflationary costs on to customers, the rising cost of living “is very good” for the company, Carlier told the Financial Times.
