Liz Truss was on Thursday forced to quit as UK prime minister, drawing to a dramatic close 44 days in office that saw her preside over financial turmoil and catastrophic damage to the ruling Conservative party.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz dropped his opposition to an EU gas price cap after late-night summit talks aimed at quelling the energy crisis hanging over the union’s economy.

Draft conclusions seen by the Financial Times showed that leaders were prepared to endorse further work towards a gas price cap — although with heavy caveats aimed at easing Berlin’s fears that market interventions could endanger security of supply.

MSD Partners, a company set up by Michael Dell, is merging with Byron Trott’s BDT merchant bank, creating an advisory and investment group that counts some of the world’s highest profile billionaires and entrepreneurs as clients.

英国消费者信心指数仍

UK consumer confidence hovered around a 50-year low last month as Britons struggled against a backdrop of soaring inflation, political turmoil and high borrowing costs, according to new data.

最新数据显示，由于英国人在通胀飙升、政治动荡和借贷成本高企的背景下苦苦挣扎，英国消费者信心指数上月徘徊在50年来低点附近。

The consumer confidence index, a closely watched measure of how people view their personal finances and wider economic prospects, edged up only two points to minus 47 in October, from the minus 49 the previous month.

消费者信心指数是一个受到密切关注的指数，主要衡量人们如何看待其个人财务状况和更广泛的经济前景。该指数10月份仅上升两个点，从上个月的负49升至负47。

The October reading was only marginally better than September, which was the lowest since records began in 1974.
