TIPS | How to ride a rentable bike?
Using the rentable bikes in Shanghai is a great way to get around, but for expats the interface can be a bit confusing since it’s all in Chinese.
Below is a step-by-step guide to getting set up on the two most popular shareable bike apps (Chinese number and bank account required).
美团(MeiTuan) and 哈啰出行(HelloBike) are both available in the app store.
美团 (MeiTuan)
哈啰出行 (HelloBike)
Tip: you can also open HelloBike through Alipay!
Create an account: enter your Chinese number. You can go into settings later and add more info if you want.
美团 (MeiTuan)
哈啰出行 (HelloBike)
Before you can use the bike, you need to put some money into your account first. Each ride is generally ¥1.5 for the first 15 minutes, so you don’t need to add hundreds of yuan beforehand.
Take HelloBike as an example (click to enlarge):

1. Click on your wallet and then to the balance.
2. Click the blue button to recharge and you can pay by Alipay or WeChat.
You can now use the helpful in-app maps to get real-time updates on where the closest bikes to you are.
美团 (MeiTuan)
哈啰出行 (HelloBike)
Click the black/blue bars on the screen (扫码开锁) and scan the QR code on the handle or above the locking collar to start your ride.
Circled in the pictures are the locking collars -- those will pop unlocked when you scan the QR code, and you will have to push them closed when you are finished.
Tip: You can ride both MeiTuan bikes and Mobikes with MeiTuan app.
