English Skills Workshop at Zhuhai

The Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai) organized an English language workshop on November 25, 2016. With full support from the English Backbone Curriculum Project Team, the objective of this workshop was to provide students with the basic skills to work in an international, English-speaking environment.

Prof. Kwak delivered the opening speech explaining way major in Philosophy and what are English courses for. Citing examples from the Silicon Valley, Prof. Kwak stated that studying Philosophy could promote new creativity with critical thinking which was key to change our world better. The English Courses provided by the Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai) were to make bridges between China and the world and provide students with the broader range of choices.

Dr. Rodrigues gave detailed guidelines about how to write a paper in English. From his point of view, having an audience in mind was crucial throughout the whole writing process. The capacity to do autonomous research , formulate an autonomous argument and writing skills also determined whether a paper was good.

Dr. Beaumont examined some guidelines which were particularly useful for writing philosophy papers. He maintained that one thing set philosophical arguments apart from arguments in history or empirical social science papers was the greater reliance on deductive reasoning. Giving an example of a deductively valid argument, he explained to the students what was deductively sound. As a native English speaker, Dr. Beaumont also provided etiquette advice for students.

As the last session of the workshop, the speech Dr. Pao-Shen Ho gave was about how to study English, how to improve English skills and how to read English Philosophical texts.

Many thanks for the kind efforts made by our excellent faculties!

English Skills Workshop at Zhuhai
