Over 70 percent of Chinese university students support premarital sex, says a national survey.
17,966 respondents from 130 universities were questioned for the survey, conducted by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the China Family Planning Association.
24 percent of respondents said they don’t support any kind of premarital sex, while 32 percent support it on the condition that the couple will get married soon afterwards.
Last year, a survey conducted by Shanghai Normal Unversity found that more than 60 percent of university students approved of premarital sex. 18 percent said they were absolutely fine with sex before marriage, 23 percent said they weren’t bothered by it, while 21 percent were unsure. Only 16 percent said they were dead set against premarital sex.
In 2005, a Beijing-based youth magazine survey found that a third of its respondents were in favor of premarital sex.
Meanwhile, the transmission of HIV on Chinese campuses continues to rise at an alarming rate. While some schools have taken the controversial step of handing out free condoms to students, Ningbo University has criticized its student body for being sexually active and called on them to “adopt a moral lifestyle“.
