 Preface

Gongkan was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1989. He graduated from the Experimental College of Kasetsart University and the School of Arts at Silpakorn University. Currently, he works and resides in Bangkok, Thailand. After graduating, Gongkan moved to New York for three years of artistic development. While engaging in graphic design, he also befriended a group of like-minded street artists in New York City. This experience became the foundation of his artistic language. With the concept of “Teleport Art,” he presents his work showcasing the deep connections with his hometown and calls his art “Sensory Art.” Because of his unique artistic language, his creation gained high recognition in the New York Street art scene. In 2019, he returned to Bangkok and swiftly became one of Southeast Asia’s most prominent young artists. His creations span diverse mediums including painting, sculpture, and installations. He has also collaborated with numerous fashion brands, showcasing his work in cities such as Bangkok, New York, Paris, Havana, Seoul, Singapore, and Beijing.

Gongkan's works often exhibit a distinctive "dreamlike" quality, it presents an entirely new world distinct from our reality. The protagonist in his art is always placed in a simple, bright, and innocent natural setting. This nature can be a grassy field, a starry sky on a moonlit night; sometimes it is the ever-changing weather, a white cloud, a clear blue sky, or an opened umbrella. However, these different weather conditions are both figurative yet abstract or symbolic, reflecting the ideal world the protagonist aspires to. What has created this expression and style? We can see in Gongkan's paintings the inspiration of surrealist art and Magritte, who always searches for tension "between" unrelated objects, reconstructing the charming, poetic narrative of "between." The early stages of his career in designing advertisements and street art, allowed Gongkan to express his work using the language of pop culture, making his pieces easily understandable and fashionable. Growing up in the 1990s, he was deeply influenced by TV cartoons, like every kid, reconstructing the plots and character development through imagination, which evolved into his current narrative approach. Having lived and studied in both New York and Bangkok, Gongkan draws upon these contrasting environments as dual sources of inspiration and refuge when confronting challenges. In his artistic journey, he envisions teleportation and the transcendence of barriers in time and space, setting a thematic backdrop for his creative expression.

Through various mediums of work, Gongkan reveals modern dilemmas and offers reassurance. He preserves the fundamentals of art and childhood through popular visual language and innocent concepts, providing solace for people and compensating for love, freedom, and happiness. In some ways, this also explains the direct yet clear meanings of pop culture for the public.
