New Life

The new semester has already began around a month ago. New students who have just arrived in Nanjing definitely find Nanjing to be quite new to them. How do you go about having a happy university life in Nanjing? Below are a few guides that we are offering to all of you as a reference.

1. Nanjing has many amusing and entertaining events. You can invite friends to go the Deiji or the Olympic Stadium to hang out, go bowling at Wutaishan, or watch concerts at the Olympic or Wutaishan Sports Stadium

2. Every new university student who has exclaimed about how beautiful Nanjing’s parasol trees are will end up hating them next year in the spring. In April and May the parasol tree fill the city, and you'll need to wear a face mask when you go out.

3. With respect to cuisine, besides Confucius Temple, Lion’s Bridge, Mingwalang, and Kexiang are the places Nanjing people most love.

4. Nanjing has many scenic sites. Basic level scenic sites include the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Confucius Temple and Xuanwu Lake. Mid level sites include the Nanjing Museum, Laomendong, the Librairie Avant Garde, and 1912. High level sites include Yihe Road and the Sifang Art Museum.

5. Nanjing has a sea of flowers throughout the year like the cherry blossoms of Jiming Temple and Nanjing Forest University, the sunflowers of the Nanjing College of Information Technology, the tulips of the Greenery Theme Park, the lotus of Xuanwu Lake, and the plum blossoms of Zhongshan Mountain.

6. Ikea is located at the Kazimen Station on Metro Line 3. You can grab a few inexpensive items to decorate your dorm room.

7. You can get a free newspaper every day in the morning when you take the metro. After you finish reading it don’t throw it away. You can put it in the newspaper rack at the exit.

8. You definitely don’t want to stay in the dorm when you have free time. You can get a half-price discount with your student ID whether in Nanjing or the many scenic sites in other cities.

9. Ofo, Mobike, and Little Blue can all be seen throughout Nanjing. New students don’t need to buy bicycles. These public bikes are enough to help you cut down on your walking distance.

10. You can go shopping at Happy Lady in Xinjiekou. Make sure to haggle at 1/3 the price the store owner says.

11. Even when you buy roadside snacks, you can pay with WeChat or Alipay, so you don’t have to carry cash.

12. Every university has a university cat. There are also exceptions, some have groups of them.

13. If you want to go abroad on exchange or for travel, the visas for many countries can be processed in Nanjing: the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Denmark, Australia, Finland (includes Iceland), Sweden, Belgium, and Croatia.

14. Nanjing traffic travels in all directions. Taking the high speed train is very convenient. One weekend is enough to visit surrounding cities like Shanghai, Suzhou, or Hangzhou.

15. During holidays, university students studying in Nanjing take vacuum packed bags of boiled salted duck home with them.

16. After you graduate if you want to stay in Nanjing and work, you can apply for a university student room rental subsidy, a minimum of 600 RMB per month.

17. If you eat Duck Blood and Vermicelli Soup you definitely want to go to a small shop with a smoky feel to it. We guarantee you’ll never forget it.

18. Plane tickets to places around the country are much cheaper in the off season. There are fewer people and you save money when you travel at this time.
