Nanjing Metro: all you wanna know!

Everyday the Nanjing Metro has over 2 million people ride on it. You could say it is a pretty reliable method of transportation. Though you may frequently take the metro, there are many secrets that you might not know about.


1. The Nanjing Metro logo is the Nanjing city flower, the plum blossom. Inside of the flower is a the shape of a metro car, and is also a simplified version of the character “Nan”, and means Nanjing.

2. The Nanjing Metro’s one way ticket is in the shape of a “coin”, unlike the card shape that many cities have.

3. The starting price is 2 RMB. You can travel 10 kilometers and go to around 9 stops. The most expensive is 12 RMB and you can travel 105 kilometers!

4. The Nanjing Metro has many detailed humanized services. For example, free newspapers are handed out on work days after 7am.

5. Besides free newspapers, there are also free medical kits to prevent emergency situations.

6. If you come across a rainy day, you can rent an umbrella in the metro. Pay a 30 RMB deposit, and return it within 7 days.

7. The decorations inside of the metro change sometimes on holidays. For example, on Valentine’s Day there is a metro love letter station.

8. The Nanjing Metro has many them art walls, like the Line 4 Xiaozi. The theme culture is the great endeavors of Nanjing people.

9. Zhujiang Road Station is also called Candy Station because it is near the Children’s Hospital. There are a few more parents with children at this station, and so there may be frequent occurrences of children crying. Later on the workers in the station brought candy to work and gave them to the children. Then this station was called Candy Station.

10. Calligraphers were invited to write all of the names of the Nanjing Metro stations.

11. All of the inscriptions on the stops on Metro Line 1 were done by Professor Huang Dun of the Nanjing Art Institute. The inscription on the stops on Nanyan Line were done by Sun Xiaoyun, a National First Class Artist and Vice Chairman of the Provincial Calligraphy Association. All of the inscriptions on the stops on Line 2 were done by Wei Tianchi, Vice Chairman of the China Calligraphy Association and Chairman of the Jiangsu Province Calligraphy Association. All of the inscriptions on the stops on Metro Line 3 were done by Yan Gongda, Director of the Southeast University’s Chinese Calligraphy Research Institute.

12. Nanjing Metro’s close very late. The downtown lines all close after 11pm. The suburban area S Line closes at 10pm.

13. Different routes of the Nanjing Metro have different symbolic colors. For example, Line 1 is blue, Line 2 is red, and Line 3 is green....

14. Nanjing Metro Line 3 passes through the Southeast University’s Jiulong Lake Campus, Sipailou Campus, and the Chengxian Institute from north to south. It is a veritable campus line.

15. A person once responded to the song “Please Let Me Go” that was broadcast in the Zhonghuamen Metro Station for 3 years. The person heard cocoons. Supposedly a guy working at the metro had broken up with his girlfriend . A reporter conducted an exclusive investigation, and surprisingly found it it was true!

16. Every car of the Nanjing Metro has a compartment number and train door label like “063B 5A”. 063B is the compartment number. 5A is the train door label. If you and a friend bump heads or lose something, remembering this sequence of numbers will be very useful.

17. You cannot eat on the Nanjing Metro. Law enforcement personnel will make rounds. If they see you eating they will stop you, and give you a fine.

18. If you lose something on the metro, you can call the metro hot line 51899999. The fastest way is to contact the station platform’s service center.
