Now, instead of going to the public security office, expats in Shenzhen can register their entry to China through WeChat.
Shenzhen is the first city in China to allow this process to be done through WeChat, and other cities may allow it in the future as well. All of this is important because of the laws of China require expats to do this process.
According to article 39 of the “Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People’s Republic of China,” expats who reside or stay in accommodations other than hotels and those who accommodate them must process entry registration formalities with the public security office closest to their place of residence within 24 hours after the foreigners’ arrival.
How to Register Your Residence With the PSB Through WeChat
1) Follow the Shenzhen Bureau of Public Security on WeChat
Simply search for “szga-110” under Official Accounts and follow it.
2) Find the Necessary Form to Fill Out
Enter the account, and tap on “民生”. Then tap on the second tab on the top of the screen (出入境) .
Then tap the icon shown in the image above, to enter the “Foreigner Temporary Residence Registration Form”.
3) Fill Out the Form
Fill in all your information into the form, and double check everything.
Please note, you can't fill out the “Household Information” section manually. Instead, a QR code for your apartment/home needs to be scanned.
If you don't have this QR code, you will need to do the normal registration process at the PSB.
4) Attach Any Requested Pictures/Documents
According to Shenzhen's Management and Service Center for Expats, you will also need to upload photos of your passport and the housing contract.
5) Checking The Application
After registering, you should receive an electronic copy by phone, the next day. If you don't, you can enter the page for registration again, and tap on “Query” to find out why.
