An estimated 160 million people across China are expected to make return trips before this year's Spring Festival travel rush ends on February 18, Xu Yahua, an official with the Ministry of Transport (MOT), said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Statistics from MOT show that the number of passenger trips made during the Spring Festival travel rush or chunyun continue to witness a downward trend as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

February 10, the 32nd day of the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush that began on January 10 this year, saw 12.57 million passenger trips, a drop of 84.8 percent from last year.

A total of 1.378 billion passenger trips were made during the first 32 days of the travel rush, including 203 million railway trips, 1.12 billion road trips, 16.49 million boat trips, and 37.08 million flights, with an overall decline of 43.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

With eight days left before chunyun ends, Xu added that the passenger load rate of different vehicles will be strictly controlled.

The capping seat occupancy should be within 50 percent for long-distance passenger shuttles, liners and chartered vehicles for migrant workers in a bid to ensure passengers are seated at a safe distance from each other.

Bus services were temporarily suspended in 428 cities of 27 provinces across China to curb the spread of the epidemic pneumonia, but they are expected to resume routine operation gradually. So far, buses in 20 prefecture-level cities and 18 county-level cities have started running again.

Shanghai introduces public transport, travel hub safety plan

Shanghai has introduced a comprehensive and intensive prevention plan for all of its public transportation and travel hubs to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) as an influx of people is expected to return to the city on Monday.

Every passenger must undergo temperature checks, health registration and wear a face mask if they enter via a highway, railway, airport or dock. Disinfection has also been enhanced at railway stations, airports and in buses, metro trains and taxis, the municipal government said Sunday during its daily press conference on the NCP epidemic.

Metro passengers now have their temperature checked at 106 stations around the city, with all lines covered, Shanghai Metro said on Sunday. A person with a temperature higher than 37.3 degrees Celsius is subject to medical observation and possible quarantine.

The metro administration also reminded the public that it is mandatory for people to wear face masks on the train. Anyone who doesn't wear a mask will be barred from entering train carriages.

Shanghai Transportation Commission said on Saturday that those who take buses from 99 bus stations around the city now have temperature checks, with 370 routes covered.

There has been an increase of passengers arriving in Shanghai over the past week. On Sunday, the city's three railway stations received about 120,000 arrivals, according to the rail authorities. The arrival figure was 103,000 on Saturday, 102,000 on Friday, and 89,000 on Thursday.

The city's two airports received 116,000 passengers from Thursday to Saturday. On Sunday, Pudong International Airport received 48,000 and Hongqiao International Airport 27,000.

Passenger flow on the city's metro trains also increased from a bare minimum during the Spring Festival to about 819,000 passengers on Saturday.

Temperature Checks for Coronavirus Rolled out on Nanjing Metro

Temperature checks are becoming the norm in Nanjing, as the city continues the fight against the outbreak of coronavirus 19-nCoV. Office buildings, shops and now public transportation have all now begun the practice.

The Nanjing Metro has today started to enhance screening of passengers entering stations across the network. Passengers are being asked to cooperate with staff in taking a temperature check at designated points.

Metro staff shall report passengers found with a temperature over 37.3°C  and persuade them to leave the station, says bulletin board, Dissemination Nanjing.

The “Nanjing City Notice on the Implementation of Relevant Measures for Wearing Masks in Public Places” also requests passengers to wear masks during their time on the metro. Staff will discourage passengers who refuse to comply from entering the station.

Xinjiekou Station has also installed two green, infrared, body-temperature scanners.

Already dubbed the “Green Doors”, an alarm on the devices will sound when a passenger’s temperature is found to be over 37.3°C. Staff will then perform a secondary measurement. If necessary, they will then notify the nearby health and epidemic prevention department.

The devices are located by the station’s north and south security points.

In addition to temperature checks, Nanjing Metro is also suspending services to some stations on two lines in the network’s rural extremities. Firstly, on Line S8, from Shenqiao to the terminus, Jinniuhu; a total of three stations. Secondly, on Line S3, from Maweixu to the terminus, Gaojiachong; a total of seven stations.

More to Good Hygiene on the Nanjing Metro than just Temperature Checks

Hygiene on the Nanjing Metro has come a long way. Before the current coronavirus outbreak, the metro banned food and drink as far back as July, 2014.

The Nanjinger has also previously told the heart-warming story of a woman who has been cleaning the Nanjing Metro for 13 years. Ms. Yang Yuegao is Head of Cleaning at Line 1 terminus, Maigaoqiao. Her and her team have precisely 3 minutes to make a train spotless before its return southward.
