100+ Foreigners Caught in Illegal Employment!

On March 1, 2021, a case of illegal employment involving more than 100 foreigners was released by Yangtse Evening Post, which clearly announced the fact that a total of 7 organizers had profited hundreds of thousands of Yuan by cheating short-term study visa under false pretenses for many times, and then they were put under arrest and dealt with in accordance with law.

According to Yangzhou police, below are the bare facts of the case.

Cause: Making Profit from Foreign-Teacher Market
Per the policemen, a Chinese-foreign couple, Lin and Wang (all aliases), who found the foreign teaching market in China was lucrative, and then decided to build a criminal chain by publishing illegal employment advertisements on the internet and then organizing foreigners to enter China illegally. Wang, as a foreigner, took his own advantage of recruiting and introducing foreigners who come to China illegally, while Lin was responsible for solving the visa problem.

Profit-Making Method: Intermediary Fee & Fee for Forged Visa
According to the police, each time Wang and Lin successfully introduced a foreigner to teach in an off-campus training institution, they would receive an intermediary fee of 5,000 Yuan from the training institution. Meanwhile, if Lin was needed to help falsify academic credentials to apply for a fake study visa in China, another 6,500 Yuan would be charged to the foreigner. 

It is worth noticing that, foreigners applying for English-teaching work visa in China shall meet the following three conditions.

• A native English speaker;

• Bachelor’s degree or above;

• More than 2 years working experience.

After investigation, since 2018, Lin and Wang have illegally organized 6 foreigners to cross the national border eight times.

The Target Group of Foreigners

According to the Yangzhou Entry-Exit Administration Bureau, most of the foreigners involved in the case are from South Africa, and not only have high school degrees, but are unable to provide a criminal background check.

Therefore, as to avoid the illegal detention of foreign nationals, the local entry-exit administration should strengthen the legal awareness and policy publicity of foreign personnel, and inform them of the relevant laws, regulations and working conditions.
