There has been discussion about the case of 4 foreign students from Jiangsu University stealing 15 bottles of wine but only got a fine of 6,500 yuan.

In response to this, the Intermediate People's Court of Zhenjiang (Jiangsu province) made the official announcement, to clarify the matter:

"On March 18, four foreign students were fined 6,500 Yuan for stealing 15 bottles of foreign wine that were worth 4770 Yuan.

According to the Chinese Criminal Law (Article 264), anyone who steals public or private property in a relatively large amount shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment for not more than three years, criminal detention or surveillance, plus a fine.

Based on the fact that each of the 4 defendants pleaded guilty and actively refunded compensation, and some defendants surrendered themselves, the court fined the defendants in accordance with the law and will not put them into prison. However, relevant department will take charge of their deportation from China."

According to the court, all four students are from Jiangsu University, and all from Zambia.

From February 6th to March 16th, 2020, the 4 students carried out wine from Metro Supermarket seven times, 15 bottles in total, by hiding the wine in their clothes. The total value of the wine is 4,770.97 yuan.

Three of them were arrested first, and the last one turned themselves into the police station after being called by the others. The four students have returned a total of 4,000 Yuan to the victim.

After the trial, the Intermediate People's Court of Zhenjiang  announced that the 4 students had constituted the crime of theft as a crime group. As one of the defendants assisted the police in arresting other defendants in the same case after he was caught. He could be given a lighter punishment for his cooperation. As the other defendants all voluntarily surrendered and confessed crime truthfully, they could be given lighter punishment as well.

Therefore the Intermediate People's Court of Zhenjiang set the the fine amount according to their behavior: one was sentenced to a fine of 2,000 Yuan as he attended all 7 times of stealing, and the other three defendants were sentenced to a fine of 1,500 Yuan each as they attended for fewer times. Beside the four defendants were ordered to pay 770.97 Yuan to the supermarket as a compensation.
