Grain in Ear

The traditional Chinese calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms. Mángzhǒng (pīnyīn)  or more commonly pronounced as Mángzhòng, literally "grain in ear" in English, is the 9th solar term. It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 75° and ends when it reaches the longitude of 90°. It more often refers in particular to the day when the Sun is exactly at the celestial longitude of 75°. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around June 5 (June 6 East Asia time) and ends around June 21.

Each solar term can be divided into 3 pentads (候). They are: first pentad (初候), second pentad (次候) and last pentad (末候). Pentads in Mangzhong include:

First pentad 初候

The praying mantis is produced

Second pentad 次候

䴗()始鸣

The shrike begins to give its notes

Last pentad

The mocking bird ceases to sing

The arrival of Grain in Ear signifies the ripening of crops such as barley and wheat. It is also a busy period for farmers.

Rainfall increases during Grain in Ear compared to the previous eight solar terms. Regions in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are about to enter the Plum Rains season. Plum Rains is a good period for growing rice, vegetables and fruits.

An old proverb has it that “Getting busy with farm work in Grain in Ear,” which is prevailing in many provinces. Grain in Ear is especially critical for planting rice. There is a saying in Guizhou that goes, “If you don’t plant rice in Grain in Ear, planting will be in vain.”

"An Miao" (meaning seedling protection) is a traditional farming activity of southern Anhui province that has been practiced since the early Ming Dynasty. Every year when Grain in Ear comes, they hold the sacrificial ceremony to pray for good harvests in the fall. People make different types of bread from wheat flour and color them with vegetable juice. The bread is used as a sacrificial offering to pray for a good harvest and people's safety.

During Grain in Ear, as the flowers withered away, people in old times used to hold sacrificial ceremonies to bid farewell to the flora and show their gratitude. Today, this custom does not exist in many areas of China. We can only read about the liveliness and excitement of the ceremony in some of the ancient novels.
