We’ve witnessed the possibilities of living within small spaces in the alleys of Taipei, so when we approached the hutong, the first question was “how does one step outside the boundaries to create different spatial qualities?” This courtyard wasn’t a typical, classical quadrangle one; it was more of a “left-over” space, if you will. We tried to introduce external circulation into our public space by reconfiguring the structures of the existing building.”

The total built-up area of courtyard

is approximately 200 square metres

To improve on the existing parti

the front yard and front hall

were fused together to become a generous,

multi-functional reception hall

which is further connected to an inner yard

by a movable wooden door

Additionally  center courtyard has been reconfigured to increase the number of rooms

from 6 to 9

Meanwhile, the total area of the interior

was expanded to 318 square metres

By excavating new spaces in the

irregularly shaped courtyard

usable room was freed=up dramatically

On the one hand, an atrium that connects in-between ground floor and underground was designed because the vast open space of underground area is not durable for several of usage. The part that was initially connected to the first floor was pretty cramped, so it’s urgent to break the ceilings of the basement. In this way, all rooms can be connected so as to release all the potentials. On the other hand, the atrium also enables sunlight to come in and helps with ventilation, solving the basement’s problem of darkness and confinement.

The Hutong culture is not a sophisticated one; it is instead characterized by roughness just like the  wind-swept loess of the plains. So when began reconstruction, we retained its previous looks on the outside. The ceiling structure was also kept; the fabric art of hanging lamps fits well into a traditional Chinese atmosphere.

We introduced a steel-frame structure and glazing, whose elements form a sharp contrast against the traditional rough-hewn textures; old and new collide.

The rooftop that was originally used

for keeping doves has been demolished

and now it’s an open space for recreation where

visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the hutong

The most fascinating thing about hutongs is that over the ages, it bears witness to human interactions, both private and public, and how every family associates with their neighbors. Stories in high-rise buildings are rather enclosed and aloof, but the ones in hutong flow like tributaries to a river, and this construction offers new interpretations of these stories.
