Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located in the Resident Coordinator System Leadership Branch of the United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO), based in New York.
The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) is the highest ranking representative of the UN development system at the country level. RCs lead UN Country Teams and coordinate UN support to countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda. They are the designated representatives of – and report to – the UN Secretary-General.
The RC System Leadership Branch is responsible for ensuring that the UN System has the right RC in the right place at the right time; that RCs are diverse in terms of gender, geographic origin, language, and professional background; and that RCs perform according to expectations.
The Intern reports to the Senior Talent Management Coordinator.
This internship is for an initial period of six months.
The internship is UNPAID. The intern may be engaged on a full-time or a part-time basis. The intern may report to office in person in New York, USA or may be engaged remotely.
Responsibilities
The intern will work with team members from the talent management pillar and will undertake the following duties:
- Conduct research on and assist in organizing outreach and talent scouting activities targeting potential candidates for the Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator (RC/HC) Talent Pipeline and RC positions currently working in UN System entities, Member States, civil society organizations and the private sector, with a focus on ensuring gender and geographical diversity.
- Assist in collating lessons learned from the 2022 selection process for the RC/HC Talent Pipeline and identify new channels and ideas to (i) address the existing talent gap in the current RC Pool, with respect to experience, language skills, gender balance and geographical diversity; (ii) expand the outreach/sourcing efforts to attract and target senior leadership talents; and (iii) enhance the existing assessment tools to better assess candidates ’ competencies and to minimize any bias in the selection process.
- Support in designing a mechanism to maintain the RC Pool up-to-date and in conducting a clean-up exercise of the pool to gauge pool members ’ continued interest and availability to serve as an RC.
- Support in designing a knowledge management system to effectively organize, maintain, archive and share information with the appropriate stakeholders.
- Assist in drafting and preparing background documentation, presentations, guidelines or reports related to the RC/HC Talent Pipeline, RC Pool, or RC selection, as appropriate.
- Perform other duties, as required.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor ’ s level or equivalent).
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
For internship positions fluency in English is required. Any other language requirements can be indicated by the hiring offices as needed.
Assessment

- Explain why you are the best candidate for this specific internship.
- Explain your interest in the United Nations Internship Programme in general and this assignment in particular.
In your online Personal History Profile, be sure to include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references. Do not forget to attach your proof of enrolment or graduation.
