I Dwell in Possibility

July 16 - August 21, 2022

Gallery I | SPURS Gallery, D-06, 798 Art Zone, 2 Jiuxianqiao Rd, Chaoyang District, Beijing

SPURS Gallery is pleased to announce “I Dwell in Possibility”, a summer group exhibition presenting works by Ross Caliendo, Huang Yuxing, Greg Ito, Scott Kahn, Jacopo Pagin, Qiu Anxiong, and Zheng Lu with varied approaches to landscape painting and sculpture. The exhibition is curated by Melanie Ouyang Lum, and will be on view in Gallery I from July 16, 2022.

Although it may be surprising to some, the centuries old tradition of Landscape painting is making a resurgence in contemporary art. This exhibition takes inspiration from Emily Dickinson’s famous poem “I Dwell in Possibility” where she links the natural world with the divine. Although Dickinson was a recluse, through her poetry she was able to travel far beyond the confines of her physical space. The last two years of the pandemic have profoundly changed the way that we live and many seek freedom, refuge, inspiration and solace through Landscape painting. This exhibition juxtaposes generations of artists from Europe, the United States and China.

Ross Caliendo uses landscape painting as his field of colour experiments. The paint is thickly applied to a monochrome primer, which is then brushed or scraped off to expose the underpainting and further accentuated by an artist designed frame. Mountains, trees, and rocks have been taken directly from the artist’s intuition and are rendered in unnatural colours, creating a fantastical and majestic scene. “I Dwell in Possibility” presents two of Caliendo’s most recent works, of which the triptych Encounter is his largest work to date.

Huang Yuxing mixes fluorescent lighting with traditional colours, blending oil and brushwork techniques. The fine lines around the overlapping mountains and glistening lakes in this work allude to the texture of the natural landscape itself, a testament to the artist’s creative process. The tension between jumping colours and sublime emotions is worth pondering.

Greg Ito’s ultra-flat, elegantly cut landscapes are overlaid with visual vocabulary drawn from his personal and family history as a Japanese American. His cinematic works are subtle and autobiographical, but they also point to eternal subjects such as love, death, hope, and tragedy.

Scott Kahn relies on real-life as a source of inspiration treating his work as a visual diary of himself and the world around him. His allegorical scenes, painted with meticulous brushstrokes exude an aura of magical realism and mystery, revealing the inescapable loneliness of man in the presence of nature.

Jacopo Pagin was born in Italy and based in Brussels, he mixes elements of Italian folklore, the occult, surrealist photography, and pop culture, and introduces the unconscious into his mysterious nature-inspired work. The still life and human figures in his images are like what Jung called ‘archetypes’, helping the artist to overcome the individual dimension and enter the collective spirit.

Qiu Anxiong puts together two themes that have long preoccupied him: nature and history. The products of modern human civilization are stacked in front of mountains and rivers that have remained intact for ages, and in this ruinous image, the animals are at ease as if oblivious to the changes behind them. The fragments of different histories are interwoven to create a thought-provoking dystopian scene.

Zheng Lu has gradually built and refined his artistic logic and language system in his recent practice, incorporating concepts such as substances, words, water,  time, and space into a self-constructed conceptual framework, forming a unique way of expression. He transforms natural phenomena into digital models, which are eventually presented as sculptures of stainless steel structures.

The exhibition is on view until August 21, 2022.

Ross Caliendo (b. 1988, Pittsburgh, PA) graduated with a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design. Caliendo has exhibited at Grifter Space (New York, NY), No Place Gallery (Columbus, OH), Penske Projects (Montecito, CA), Phil Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Fisher Parrish Gallery (New York, NY), Blum & Poe (Los Angeles, CA), and Night Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), among others. Ross Caliendo lives and works in Los Angeles.

Huang Yuxing (b. 1975, Beijing) is widely recognized among his generation for his dexterous ability to create paintings that reflect and preserve the process of their creation. Colors, brushstrokes, and traces of the artist’s hand endure on his canvases after being continuously overlaid and blended. The meticulous brushstrokes and intense colors that pervade his works are grounded in the traditional Chinese realist technique, ‘Gongbi Zhongcai’, while building upon these principles through a signature contemporary style that continues to evolve.

Huang’s artistic practice is marked by exceptional depth: while his works may at first recall an Expressionist style, they are deeply rooted in a detailed construction of landscape and human form that effuses vibrant color and reflects the experience of creation. Huang’s works are marked by a sharp and clear contrast between the vitality of color and the harsh realities of life. Rivers, bubbles, treasures, sunrises, and sunsets are recurring motifs in his works that are presented with dazzling visual effect, yet embody the artist’s extensive study of individuals, nature, life, politics, and beyond.

今年,圣迭戈ICA推出了伊托的首场机构个展“All You Can Carry”。

Greg Ito (b. 1987, Los Angeles, CA) earned his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2008. His work has been exhibited widely in group and solo exhibitions at museums and galleries including Maki Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, CA; Division Gallery, Montreal, QC; Arsenal Contemporary, Toronto, ON; Jeffrey Deitch New York, NY; Alexander Berggruen, New York, NY; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA; Lyles and King, New York, NY; and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts – YBCA, San Francisco, CA. His first museum solo exhibition, All You Can Carry, was on view at ICA San Diego earlier this year. He is in the permanent collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Ito lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Scott Kahn (b. 1946, Springfield, Massachusetts) is an American painter with a long exhibition history, primarily in New York, and abroad. Kahn draws inspiration from life and considers his oeuvre to be a visual diary of the world around him. His subject matter reflects the people and places which he experiences. Drawing from memory and imagination, his work has a dream-like, surreal quality. For the last several years Kahn has been working at home in Westchester, New York, but maintains a studio in Brooklyn. He received his BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Rutgers University. He spent a year in Theodoros Stamos' class at the Art Students League in New York.Kahn has been a recipient of awards from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and a residency at the Edward Albee Foundation in Montauk. His work is included in major corporations and two museums in China, including the Long Museum, and the ICA Miami in Florida. His work is in the collection of the University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater.

Jacopo Pagin (b. 1988, Italy) is a painter, installation artist, and sculptor who lives and works in Brussels. Pagin’s rendered objects represent amulets or doors into a different kind of perception, highlighting the deep psychedelic tendencies of the artist as well as allowing for philosophical and historical inquiry.

Pagin graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice with a degree in painting and decoration in 2013. He subsequently graduated with an MFA in Fine Arts from LUCA School of Arts, Brussels in 2018. Pagin’s work has been shown in curatorial projects by Germano Celant, Alessandra Franetovich, Carola Cometto, and Emanuelle Luciani. Pagin has shown internationally, including at Everyday Gallery, Antwerp; CB32, Milan; Manifesta XIII, Marseille; HVW8, Berlin; Chalton Gallery, London; and The Hole, New York.

Qiu Anxiong (b. 1972, Chengdu) graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1994 and later studied at the University Kassel's College of Art in Germany. From 2004, he has been teaching at East China Normal University.

Qiu’s representative works include animation New Classic of Mountains and Seas, Minguo Landscape, Temptation of the Land, and video installation Staring into Amnesia. Based on Chinese mythology, Classic of Mountains and Seas, New Classic of Mountains and Seas deals with the relationship between human beings and nature as well as modern industrial civilization. Minguo Landscape, Temptation of the Land, and Staring into Amnesia, on the other hand, conveys the artist’s meditation on modern Chinese history. In his recent solo exhibition, Anthropogene- Siberia, Qiu shared his new paintings and etchings concerning history and nature, two themes he has been interested in for quite a long time. This body of works also demonstrates the artist’s refreshing spin of the medium of drawing while the video installation Anthropocene blurs the boundaries of video, sculpture, dance, space, and their relationships between one another.

Qiu’s works are collected by institutions around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, the ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst, Copenhagen, the Spencer Museum of Art, Kansas, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, the Kunsthale Zurich, the White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney, M+, Hong Kong, Yuz Museum Shanghai, Power Station of Art, Shanghai, etc.

Zheng Lu (b. 1978, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia) is an artist based in Beijing. Zheng Lu studied at Lu Xun Fine art Academy from 1998-2003 before continuing to Beijing's prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2004 until 2007. While still in school Zheng won the LVMH Prize which provided the artist with three months training at The École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, ENSBA, Paris. Zheng has mainly produced sculpture and installation work with steel structure, and also two-dimensional, multimedia, stage and public art.

Zheng gradually constructed and perfected his art logic and language system in the continuous practice. He integrated various concepts such as material, writing, water, time and space into his self-contained conceptual framework, and formed his own unique expression of language. Meanwhile, his work also implies the diversity and possibility of the state of life and discusses how to deal with the relationship between nature, self-nature and ego.
