Before going to Shenzhen, despite being in China for 4 months, I didn’t really know what to expect, apart from a fairly new big city focused on technology, somewhere in the south of China.
The first thing that struck us after landing was how green the city is, how a big part of the cars around us on the road were electric, and also how much constructions were happening at the same time all over the city: sign of an expanding and growing place. The few moments spent in the city centre were also impressive. Thinking that only 30 years ago this place was a small fishing town was unbelievable. Now full of skyscrapers of architectural prowess, the city is an invitation for innovation for its very young population who averages an age of 30 years old only.

Day 1
We started off the week with a blast: Tencent. We were all impressed by the futuristic offices and presentation. At first, we were taken from one room to another through hidden doors, discovering showrooms explaining the basis of Tencent’s technologies, before heading to another place explaining the different sides of their business. For anyone not from China or not accustomed with the company, I think it is hard to encompass how big the company is. I personally discovered how Tencent touches a lot of aspects in one’s life, whether it is communication with their hit platforms WeChat and QQ, facilitated payment with WeChat Pay, gaming, smart retailing, but also in education and healthcare. Later on, having a presentation from the Associate Director of strategy and smart retail allowed us to have more in-depth information about how the whole company works and where it is aiming to go to.
Day 2
The second day was focused on the worldwide-known company Huawei, where we visited their European City where their R&D is based, but also their HQ, and showroom. The showroom was very enlightening on how advanced China is in terms of technology, AI, IoT and all of their application.
Day 3
The third day consisted in driving an hour away from Shenzhen through the mountains, which at sunset offers a magnificent view, to visit the Chinese National Bank of Genomes. In that building of the likes of James Bond’s villains, however surrounded by pretty flamingos, top notch research are being made every day to give us a better life.
Day 4-5
The fourth and last day of company visits brought us to SCC, a chip company, showing us how components in our everyday technology is made, and in the afternoon to BYD, the electric car company, or what I thought it was. It occurs that the latter company makes much more: from energy production and storage, to new way of thinking mobility in cities with their SkyRail for example.
Our trip was capped with very insightful presentations on potential applications of the 5G in front of a panel composed of Huawei executives and Fudan professors. This afternoon lead this time by students showcased the imagination but also the business acumen of all my fellow classmates present in this trip.
Overall, this trip was a great source of knowledge and invited us to rethink the possibilities of tomorrow thanks to technology. It also allowed us, the GMiM group, to once more get together in a new adventure and create even stronger bonds. Thus, I would like to thank the CDO who reached out and convinced the companies to host us, and the Alumni Centre as well as the programme office for pulling together an insightful week, and make us discover this new Silicon Valley that most of us would probably not have the opportunity to wander otherwise.
