Sean,
Julia:I chose the GMiM as my postgraduate programme because I think it’s really unique in its combination of being very rigorously academic, but at the same time giving you a very international experience and giving you the opportunity to travel all the way to Shanghai with a very small group of diverse students, giving you the opportunity to learn from each other within an academic setting and a social setting to become a really close-knit group.
Sean:I chose the gmim because I had worked in China as an intern for about a year during my undergraduate studies and I very much enjoyed it. So I was interested in learning more about doing business in the country and hopefully finding a job there. I looked at master's degrees in all of the top Chinese universities and visited their campuses and I liked Fudan the best and the fact that I could also have a year in the UK at London business school made it even better. So it was very exciting to return to two of my favorite cities London and Shanghai. So the choice for me was a very easy one.
Julia:I think having the combination of Chinese students and international students on the GMiM was really invaluable to the whole experience. First of all, when we first moved to Shanghai our Chinese classmates were so helpful in making sure things went smoothly and things were sorted out. Without them, it would have been a very stressful experience and they really made it very enjoyable. They also showed us where the best places in Shanghai to go, to live, all of these details which we just wouldn’t have known about otherwise. Also, in the academic context, it was so great to have a range of perspectives from all around the world when we were learning about Chinese economy and Chinese business and our Chinese classmates were really helpful in helping us understand, from that first-hand perspective, how these things function and I think that really enriched our understanding as international students.
Sean:My Chinese classmates always impressed me not only by their helpfulness but also by their organization and resourcefulness. If it wasn't for them I think our group projects may not have gone as well as they did.
Julia:I think, for me, the alumni resources at LBS and FDSM have been really helpful in my job hunt. First of all, at LBS, that was more when I was actively hunting for a job, an internship which I later converted, it was all about the clubs I could join, the alumni I could speak to and reach out for a coffee chat which were really invaluable. Secondly, at FDSM, I think once I’d found the job and I knew I was going back to that, it was really nice to meet up with like-minded alumni, particularly my mentor who was just lovely and helped me to envision what a future career could look like in the field I’d chosen. It was nice to get that from an Eastern perspective, rather than just a Western perspective, and really made me think globally about my career, and not just focus my career in Europe but also involve China and elsewhere.
Sean:The most helpful things for my job hunt were some of the resources in the FDSM career center. When I had a major assessment center interview coming up, one of their mentors Doctor Cai was super helpful and prepared a big packet of information about the company for me to study. And then he met with me and walked me through the assessments in our process. His help was crucial in my being confident and successful during the assessment center and getting an offer for my ideal position. Attending the job fair that FDSM put on also made it quite easy for me to find a good internship that I had during my time at Fudan.
Julia:I think right now it’s really difficult to imagine what my life and career will look like in 10 years’ time, definitely with all the uncertainty going on right now. I think the one non-negotiable for me is that, in 10 years’ time, I will have worked and lived abroad for the majority of my career and part of that will definitely be in China. I definitely feel I have unfinished business in China, after the Coronavirus situation, I really want to go back and enjoy the professional life rather than just the student, academic life. What the GMiM has also taught me is that you can be adaptable to all different cultures around the world, whether that’s Chinese culture, or US culture, or Indian culture, all of these different countries, I think the opportunities are endless. In 10 years’ time, I really want to look back and think I took all of those opportunities to broaden my horizons and go and work abroad where I could possibly do so.
Sean:So in 10 years I’ll have lived in a couple more countries traveled to many more and hopefully have been promoted to an upper management level position. I’ll be working in an industry that I'm passionate about and with people that I enjoy being around.
Julia:Who I would like to thank the most for this whole experience would be the Fudan programme office at FDSM for the GMiM because honestly, they have had such a tough job dealing with the pandemic and making sure that we can all continue and pursue our education despite all the uncertainty going on in the world. I think the lectures we had on WebEx were absolutely brilliant, everything was managed with our thesis and the thesis defence were really lovely, and even this big tribute to our time at FDSM is such a testament to how hard they work. I’d really like to say thank you, from all of us, for how that’s been handled, and we’re really grateful to have been able to finish our degrees with the minimum disruption possible.
Sean:I wanna say thank you to Shirley Xia for being a good friend but especially for the many Chinese chats we had back when we were in London that really helped me improve my language skills and prepared me for returning to China last year. I only hope that our English chats helped you just as much.
Julia:For all of us right now, there’s a lot of disruption and uncertainty and I think, as much as we hear it all the time that ‘things will turn out OK’, I just want to wish everyone strength and adaptability to deal with this ever-evolving situation. I think in 5-10 years’ time, we will have these skills of being able to change to a situation very, very quickly, more so than any other generation has before us, and I think that’s a strength that we can hold on to when it comes to looking at our careers unfolding in front of us.
Sean:This year, our time together as classmates has been cut short all of a sudden and therefore I wish that we will all have the chance in the future to meet each other again as friends and look back on our adventurous times through London business school and Fudan.
Julia:I think, in my mind, all my favourite stories from FDSM have kind of merged into one since I came home from China and I’m really just missing the experience of turning up to school every day, turning up to campus, getting my favourite Chinese street food from the roads around Fudan, meeting up with my friends and enjoying the classes that we had a Fudan. I think that way of life will stay with me for a very long time. I think if I had to pick one thing, my favourite experience was probably our Chinese classes as international students, that was just lovely to be able to learn every single week and try, maybe not very accurately, but try and speak Chinese as much as possible, and really learn that skill alongside all the academic subjects we were studying.
Sean:I can only slightly remember this one but I recall going to KTV one night during our trip to Hangzhou. And it seemed like we were there forever, never ended because every time I thought we would leave someone kept saying, ‘add another hour’. And I can also remember at the beginning of the year going with Cedric to a company talk that was supposed to be in English but turned out to be in mandarin. I think we're both a little lost, but we stuck with it until the end. At least for me, I am too proud to admit if I can't understand it.
