Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most popular detective in literary history, famous around the world for his brilliant analytical skills and his ability to sort carefully through the subtleties (细微之处) of complex clues. Inspiration for the character came from one of Conan Doyle’s medical professors, Joseph Bell of Edinburgh, who had ‘the most remarkable powers of observation’. While other fictional detectives, Conan Doyle stated, obtained their information by chance rather than science, in his detective fiction he wanted science to ‘take the place of chance’. The first novel featuring Sherlock Holmes was published in 1887; the character would subsequently appear in three more novels and 56 short stories.
Family and Early Life
Details of Sherlock Holmes's life in Conan Doyle's stories are scarce and often vague. Nevertheless, mentions of his early life and extended family paint a loose biographical picture of the detective. Holmes says that he first developed his methods of deduction as an undergraduate; his earliest cases, which he pursued as an amateur, came from fellow university students. A meeting with a classmate's father led him to adopt detection as a profession.
Author
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British writer and medical doctor. Doyle was a prolific(高产的) writer; other than Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the Mary Celeste.

1 Overview
Sherlock is a British crime television series that presents a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The series is set in the present day, while the one-off special features a Victorian period fantasy resembling the original Holmes stories. It depicts “consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes solving various mysteries in modern-day London.
2 Plot Summary
Holmes is assisted by his flatmate and friend, Dr. John Watson, who has returned from military service in Afghanistan with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Although Metropolitan Police Service Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade and others are suspicious of Holmes at first, over time, his exceptional intellect and bold powers of observation persuade them of his value. In part through Watson's blog documenting their adventures, Holmes becomes a reluctant celebrity with the press reporting on his cases and eccentric(古怪的) personal life. Both ordinary people and the British government ask for his help.

4 Characters
Sherlock
Sherlock has a very unusual personality, and describes himself in the first episode "A Study in Pink", as a "high-functioning sociopath", a term he insists on in subsequent episodes. Others call him a "psychopath", and in "The Hounds of Baskerville" John Watson suggests to Lestrade that he believes Sherlock has Asperger syndrome(阿斯伯格综合征). This manifests itself in very poor people skills and the extremely rude manners which Sherlock shows toward everyone he deals with. At times, he also seems to exhibit sensory sensitivities, associated with autism spectrum disorders(自闭症), and occasionally exhibits "stimming" behaviors (pacing, hopping, spinning, rocking, making origami from serviettes, flapping a hand) when excited, upset, stressed, concentrating deeply, or overwhelmed.
Dr. John Watson
John Hamish Watson is Sherlock's best friend. He is often a foil to Sherlock in both appearance and personality. Unlike Sherlock, John is short with blond hair. He is friendly, compassionate, and patient, compared to Sherlock's aloof(冷漠的), cold-hearted tendencies. He gets on better with the police and takes care of practical matters at their flat, apparently doing most of the shopping. Sherlock has called him "the wisest, warmest human being he knows", and has stated that "the warmth and constancy of John's friendship" can redeem(挽回,救赎) even a "rude, ignorant, all-around obnoxious arsehole like Sherlock".
D.I. Greg Lestrade
Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade works for Scotland Yard. He has a reluctant respect for Sherlock and often defends him from the other police officers' animosity(憎恨,敌意). He is often frustrated by Sherlock's cryptic(隐秘的,难理解的) deductions and habit of withholding evidence, but believes that he is a great man (hoping that one day, he can overcome his poorer qualities, and become a "good" man).
Molly Hooper
Molly Hooper is a 31-year-old specialist registrar(住院医生) working in the morgue (太平间)at St Bartholomew's Hospital with an apparent crush on Sherlock. Due to her work position and crush on him, Sherlock frequently exploits her to let him examine or perform experiments on victims' bodies, such as in Sherlock's first scene in "A Study in Pink", beating them with a riding crop in order to study postmortem(死后的) bruising. In "The Great Game", she was in a relationship with an IT employee named Jim, later revealed to be Moriarty, who was using her to see Sherlock up close.
5 Review
In a sense, Holmes is perfectly suited for life in the Internet age, an era when specialized, obsessive knowledge makes the fanboy, or policy blogger, king. Holmes' monographs on cigar ash may be less strange today than they would have been to Victorian readers, but that's only because it's easier to form communities around obscure interests and information than it used to be. We live in a time when knowledge doesn't have to be inherently and regularly useful to bind people together.
As Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch is a wonderful whip-thin, Aspergerian, asexual type, like Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory but with more charisma(个人魅力). With his multiple fasci- nations and expertise, his disinterest in men or women or anything unrelated to his work, Holmes is no longer an occasionally necessary Victorian oddity. He's king of the modern nerds.
