The Duanwu Festival, also often known, especially in the West, as the Dragon Boat Festival,is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near the summer solstice.
端午节，也叫龙舟节(Dragon Boat Festival)，是源于中国的传统节日，端午节一般在夏至左右。
The festival now occurs on the 5th dayof the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festival's alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival. In 2017, it’s on May 30.
农历五月初五是端午节，最初称为重五节。对于2017年而言， 5月30日是端午节。
The story best known in modern China holds that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan(c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period ofthe Zhou Dynasty.
众所众知，端午节是为了纪念周朝战国时期楚国诗人和大臣屈原。
Qu Yuan was banished for opposing the alliance between Chu and Qin.He was even accused of treason. During his exile,Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty-eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River.
屈原因反对楚秦联盟遭到放逐，被判叛国罪。放逐期间，屈原写了大量诗歌。28年后，秦国占领楚国京都郢。面对山河破碎，国破家亡，屈原满怀绝望投入汨罗江自尽。
It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him or at least retrieve hisbody. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi.
传说屈原投江以后，当地人民因不舍贤臣投江死去，便驾舟奋力营救，龙舟竞渡便由此而来。未能找到屈原，他们便向江中投入糯米球，以免鱼吃掉屈原之体。粽子节即由此而来。
Three of the most wide spread activities conducted during the Duanwu Festival are eating (and preparing) zongzi,drinking realgar wine, and racing dragon boats.
端午节期间广为进行的三项活动是：包粽子吃粽子，喝雄黄酒，赛龙舟。
Other common activities include hanging up icons of Zhong Kui (a mythic guardian figure), hanging mugwort and calamus,taking long walks, and wearing perfumed medicine bags. Other traditional activities include a game of making an egg stand at noon (this "game"implies that if someone succeeds in making the egg stand at exactly 12:00 noon,that person will receive luck for the next year), and writing spells. All of these activities, together with the drinking of realgar wine, were regarded by the ancients as effective in preventing disease or evil, while promoting health and well-being.
其他常见的活动包括：悬钟馗像（神话中的保护神），悬艾叶菖蒲，走路，佩香囊。其他传统活动包括正午立蛋（如果有人在中午12点整让鸡蛋立起，来年会好运连连。）和画符游戏。古人认为上述活动和喝雄黄酒能够去病避邪，庇佑幸福安康。
