埃拉·惠勒·威尔科克斯（Ella Wheeler Wilcox ，1850—1919）是一位美国作家、诗人。她流传最广的诗便是这首《孤独》，开头两句诗常被人当名言来引用。埃拉在很小的时候就开始写诗，高中毕业的时候，便已经成为本州的知名诗人了。

《孤独》最初发表于1883年2月25日的《纽约太阳报》。她是在去参加一位官员就职舞会的路上萌发了这首诗的灵感。当时，同车的一位黑衣女子哭了。埃拉就坐在她旁边，一路上都在试着安慰她。下车后，诗人心里非常压抑，在照镜子的时候，她想起了那位黑衣女子。于是，《孤独》的开头两行便诞生了：“你笑，这世界与你一同笑；/你哭，却只能一个人哭。”她把这首诗投给了《纽约太阳报》，得到了5美元的稿费。1883年5月，这首诗被收进她的诗集《热爱之诗》。
