[Solutions] to the Most-Asked Questions on Ringy: Volume Four

2016-09-20 Swan Ringy001翻译特工

About us: Ringy001 provides FREE interpretation for expats in China. Follow Ringy, send Ringy WeChat messages, tell us whatever you need help with.

Since Ringy001 started in February 2016, we have received thousands of requests for different kinds of assistance. While we keep promoting Ringy001 as a platform providing free interpretation, more than 40% of the requests are asking for local service and information.

Ringy001 was founded with the mission of helping to make expats life easier in China. Thus, we decide to start a column to share the solutions we’ve found for our users so far, with everybody.

The three questions we featured last time were:

1, Why does the sim card company keep sending me messages?

2, How can I top up my Alipay?

3, My kuaidi / package is somewhere inside a safe-box in my compound?

(Follow us to view history and read the previous article.)

This week, we are gonna talk about:

1. Who’s calling?

It’s quite common that personal information gets traded amongst companies interested in selling in China theses days. Almost anybody who has a cellphone number in China has experienced receiving strange calls asking — "Do you want a house?”," Do you want a car?" Or even “Do you want money? (They actually mean a mortgage) "

Just because it’s common doesn’t make it right. Our users mostly find it really disturbing as they don’t know if it’s ok simply neglecting all unknown calls.

Solution: Send a text message to the caller in Chinese asking what is the matter. Save this for later—“你好, 我不方便讲电话, 请问是哪位?”(Hello, I’m not able to speak on the phone now. Who’s this?)

If you get any reply in Chinese feel free to send it over to Ringy for clear translation.

2. Time for a haircut?

Like many of the other challenges of living in China, getting a haircut is almost like gambling. From my personal experience, the result is not about where you go, it’s about how you communicate.

Solution: Always find a picture for reference! Send it over to us with description as detailed as possible, not just the dos, but also the don'ts. We will try our best to translate your ideas to the barber.

Reminder, the salon always has different prices for the shampoo they use. Different shampoo can be 2-3times more expensive and sometimes, if you don't specify, they could charge you a lot for a hair wash claiming they use the "finest" shampoo. Make sure you show them this—"请用普通的洗发水 ( Please use the normal shampoo)"

3. Holiday’s around the corner, how should I plan my trip in China?

Europe has long and enjoyable summer break which is envied by a lot of other countries. Being in China, you also get to receive a lot of traditional festival holidays that last for 3-5 days. There are some really cool places to visit within China, but how can expats plan for a trip here?

Solution: Go to Ctrip.com! Ctrip has been well known as a Chinese flight booking platform. Recently I was amazed to find them now offering settings in 14 languages and vacation packages that provide English speaking guides as well. I definitely recommend checking this site, at least for reference when you are planning a trip in Asia.

Another note, always plan your mainland holiday more than 10 days ahead to guarantee hotels and transportation, otherwise they may sell out.

So much for today! You are welcome:)
