Zanzibar 桑给巴尔

Also known as "Spice Islands"

又称“香料之岛”

Located in the Indian Ocean, around 40 Kms off the coast of mainland Africa is  Zanzibar, although it is comprised of many islands, only two are the main ones, Unguja and Pemba.

位于印度洋且离非洲大陆海岸大约40公里是桑给巴尔群岛，主要的岛屿是温古贾岛和奔巴岛。

Bantu people from the mainland Africa were the first occupants of these islands, but around 700 AD, with flourishing trade across the oceans, Arabic and Persian traders also settled in Zanzibar. Portuguese arrived in these islands around 1490 AD and successfully colonized these islands in the 16th century, Portuguese colonization ended when the elites of Oman captured Zanzibar in 1631, Zanzibar went on to become the capital city of Oman when the Sultan of Muscat and Oman moved the capital from Muscat to Stone Town.

班图人是第一批占桑给巴尔，大约700年，随着跨海的生意发展，阿拉伯人和波斯人也来到了桑给巴尔定居。1490年葡萄牙人殖民者到桑给巴尔，在16世纪的时候成功把桑给巴尔作为殖民地。在1631年的时候阿曼的苏丹成功打败葡萄牙人后把桑给巴尔的石头城当作阿曼的首都。

After the abolition of slave trade, Zanzibar transformed to a British protectorate, and in 1963 Zanzibar gained Independence from the British becoming a constitutional mornarch under Sultan, after a short period, Sultan ruling was replaced by the Afro-Shiraz Party which deposed him during Zanzibar Revolution forming the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba, then in April 26, 1964 it united with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania.

后来桑给巴尔变成英国的保护领地，在1963年桑给巴尔获得独立而变成君主立宪制国家。不久后桑给巴尔革命发生后就把桑给巴尔变成桑给巴尔和奔巴人民共和国，然后在1964年4月26号和坦噶尼喀两国合并。

Zanzibar international film festival is the largest cultural event in East Africa, thousands of tourists attends this colorful event. Multiple events and awards are held during this festival with more than a dozen of art and film activities held. The most distinctive feature is Zanzibar Taarab which is the music most loved by the Zanzibarians.
