Today we are honored to meet Israel Goytom Birhane, a proud African whom among all the charms that he possesses, he is also an inventor, he is representing and inspiring many of us, especially the ones currently studying in China.

He is from Ethiopia, and he is a senior student of Microelectronics Science and Engineering at Ningbo University.

A device for detecting similar proportions between microstructures on PVC

一种检测PVC上微结构之间相似比例的装置

Question: So, how do you explain to a layman the significance of this invention?

Answer: This invention is an Artificial Intelligence Algorithm which will help to analyse similarity between different Micro-Structures to find out which one is the best, indeed it can be applied in many areas of Physics.

问：你怎么用简单的语言来描述你的发明的重要性？

答：这是一个人工智能算法，会使用来分析不同微观结构的相似性找出哪个是最好的，在物理很多方面可以使用。

Question: How and when did you come up with this idea?

Answer: After I came to China I got an invitation from one great Professor in Ningbo University to see their work and then I realized that the comparison method is really tiresome, sometimes impossible. When I got home, I started to think about the way to solve this problem and with hard work and determination, finally, I did it.

问：你是怎么想出这个主意？

答：我来中国之后，我收到来自一个在宁波大学伟大的教授的邀请去看他们的作品，在那边的时候我发现了他们用的比较法让人很累，甚至不能用。我到家之后，我就开始想怎么解决这个问题，通过努力和决心，我终于做到的。

Question: What are the challenges that you have encountered?

Answer: Well, of course, whenever you come up with a new idea, you will face many challenges, I tried to solve a problem and that by itself is a big challenge, besides, language was a really headache to me because I wanted to read some lab reports and they were all written in Chinese language.

问：你遇到了什么挑战？

答：当然，有了一个新的主意会有很多挑战，我是想解决问题，这个问题也不简单所以这个已经可以说是一个挑战，此外，语言给我了头疼因为我想读实验室报告但是都是用中文写的。

Question: Well, how can it help the lives of the normal citizens, especially in Africa?

Answer: As far as I know there are some other complicated and expensive methods to do this comparison, in developed countries, researchers, students or Universities might have a chance to use these expensive lab equipments, but when it comes to Africa, our researches do not have access to them. We implemented my algorithm to the most cheap boards, so definitely, it will be more useful and available to most people.

问：那么，你的发明怎么会帮助普通人，特别是非洲人？

答：按我所知有其它的又复杂又贵的比较法，在发达国家，研究员，学生或者大学都可能有机会用这些贵实验设备，但是在非洲，大部分的研究员没有这些设备。我们用的算法是利用廉价板，所以当然，是很很有用，很多人可以用的。

Question: Do you have any other inventions that you have done before this? Or is you being studying in China helping you to make this happen?

Answer: Yes, actually I did some other stuffs back home, but I can agree that working with Chinese people helped me a lot, they are so talented and that encouraged me.

问：做这个发明之前你还有没有其它的发明？还是在中国帮助你完成你的这个项目？

答：是的，我以前在家的时候也有过一些，但是我同意，跟中国人合作帮我了很多，他们很有天赋这个点激励我的。

Question: What is your advise to fellow Africans studying in China?

Answer: If you think of China 50 years ago, compared to now, you might find out that development came with education, hard work, and willingness to help each other. I am telling this to all my brothers and sisters, let's use our time wisely while we stay in China. Let's do something great and help Africa. If we all helped each other we can transform our countries to the level of the developed countries in just a few years.

问：你要给其他的来花留学的同胞们什么建议？

答：如果你看50年以前的中国，来跟现在的中国比较，你会发现国家要发展是一定要有教育，努力，和乐意互相帮助。我对我的兄弟姐妹们说我们要好好利用我们在中国的时间。 我们应该做一些有意义帮助我们的非洲。如果我们互相帮助，我们可以过几年就发展到发达国家那样。

Question: What are your dreams/ambition?

Answer: My dream is to see a new era of Africa in Science and Technology, and I want to establish research and development center in Ethiopia and open it to all African brothers and sisters.

问：你有什么梦想/追求？

答：我的梦想是我要看到非洲的新科技时代，我要在埃塞俄比亚建立一个研发中心并对所有非洲兄弟姐妹们开放。
