Introduction to Foreign Literature Studies
Foreign Literature Studies is an academic journal published under the joint auspices of the Ministry of Education of China and Central China Normal University (CCNU). It was established in September 1978 as the very first scholarly journal on foreign literature in China after the “reform and opening up” period started. It started off as a quarterly first, but has changed into a bimonthly publication since 2003, with a total of more than 200 issues so far. Xu Chi, a famous writer, became the founding Chief Editor in 1978; Wang Zhongxiang, a professor at CCNU, served as the second Chief Editor between 1987-1998; Nie Zhenzhao, a professor at CCNU, was the third Chief Editor between 1999-2016; Su Hui, a professor at CCNU, has taken over as the fourth Chief Editor, with Nie Zhenzhao, now a professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, as the consultant, since the beginning of 2017. Starting from the 21st century, Foreign Literature Studies has set up and constantly consolidated an international editorial board composed of 33 world-renowned scholars from China, US, UK, France, Russia, Austria, Norway, Belgium, Estonia, Japan, and Korea.
Foreign Literature Studies has always dedicated itself to constructing a platform for the scholarly exchange between China and other countries, and it has been raising its profile within the academia in China and beyond. For instance, the journal is indexed in well regarded international and domestic citation indexes as well as journal lists, such as CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index), List of Core Journals in China, List of Chinese Core Journals in Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI, 2005-2016), the MLA International Bibliography, Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL), EBSCO, etc. In 2012, the journal was among the first to be selected and funded by the National Social Science Foundation; in 2014, it was ranked as an authoritative journal in literature by the General Assessment on the Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Journals; in 2013 and 2016, it was recognized as the scholarly journal with the greatest international influence in China; in 2018, 2020 and 2022, it was selected as “A – Core Journal” by the “AMI General Assessment of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Journals; in 2020 and 2021, it was selected as an excellent Chinese scholarly journal with international influence; in the 2023 edition of The Annual Report on the Impact Factor of Chinese Scholarly Journals, Foreign Literature Studies maintains its place in the Q1 Section of the literature category and takes the first place among all the journals on foreign literature in China. Also, the journal retains its place in the Q1 Section of SJR (Scimago Journal & Country Rank), an authoritative data assessment agency for international journals. Having scored one breakthrough after another in its continuous effort to raise its international profile, Foreign Literature Studies has contributed a lot in introducing Chinese scholarship around the world and winning the power of discourse in international scholarly exchanges.
Foreign Literature Studies aims at turning itself into a world-renowned journal with distinctive Chinese characteristics, a journal that dedicates itself to promoting Chinese discourse and the exchange between Chinese and foreign scholars by publishing the latest findings and assessments on comparative literature and world literature from both domestic and international scholars. In recent years, the journal has adopted a new editorial approach that attaches equal importance to national and international priorities, introducing a series of columns, which not only carry some distinctive features, but also respond to the issues of the time, such as Academic Interview, Dialogue between Chinese and Foreign Scholars, Literary Exchange and Mutual Learning between China and Foreign Countries, Studies on the Literature of the Nations along the “Belt and Road,” Ethical Literary Criticism, Studies on the Latest Issues in Literature, Interdisciplinary Literary Studies, and The Major Projects Sponsored by the National Social Science Fund.
For Foreign Literature Studies, quality has always been the priority. That’s why we have adopted a three-step system of anonymous review for all submissions, or an integrated “review-editing-proofreading” process. Also, we have been operating in a “multi-channel, comprehensive, and internationally collaborative approach,” namely, we still rely on paper media and the traditional distribution channels, but we have actively explored other different channels, such as establishing a WeChat site, through which high-quality articles from the journal are posted on a regular basis. In the meantime, the journal has frequently engaged in the scholarly exchange and collaboration with scholars around the world. So far, we have established a partnership with more than 10 prestigious academic organizations in the world. In the past ten years, the journal has sponsored more than 30 nation-wide or international scholarly conferences, including the one in July 2023, “20 Years of Ethical Literary Criticism: Retrospect and Prospect -- The 12th Symposium of the International Association for Ethical Literary Criticism.” Each conference attracted a huge gathering of scholars and facilitated numerous in-depth discussions of various issues, thus exerting a great impact within the academia both at home and abroad.
