“开诚布公”出自《三国志·蜀志·诸葛亮传》

诸葛亮之为相国也……开诚心，布公道。

This idiom comes from the fact that, when there is smoke or fog in the air, it is difficult to see. Sometimes when people are angry, or dislike someone, they hide the reason for those feelings.

释义：这个习语来源于生活现象，当空气中烟雾较多的时候，能见度很低。有的时候，当人们生气，或者不待见谁，他们会把引起这些感觉的原因隐藏起来。

Clear the air means that they bring those issues out in the open to work through them. This can apply to both personal and work situations.

释义：而clear the air的意思则是他们把心里的这些事儿拿出来开诚布公的讨论，并且解决掉矛盾。这个习语可以用于人和工作。

I’m in hot water with my girlfriend recently. I decide to clear the air. And we are going to have abuffet this night. 

释义：我和女朋友最近处不好，我决定解决矛盾，我们今晚将去吃自助餐。

That’s to say you can really pig out! 

释义：也就是说今晚你可以放开肚皮吃了。
