After a long and meaningful summer vacation, Nanyan Focus is now back to bring you the happenings on campus. Here are some of the highlights from June 17 to September 8 that you need to know:

PKUSZ holds opening ceremony for AY 2023-34
Aug.
On August 31, PKUSZ held its opening ceremony to welcome new students from around the world. PKUSZ Chancellor Zhang Jin delivered a speech. Days before that on August 11, School of Transnational Law (STL) had already kicked off their new semester. On August 21, approximately 400 graduate students joined the HSBC Business School (PHBS) family. Students at other schools also arrived at the campus before 29, getting well prepared for their new life.

Deputy Governor of Guangdong province visits PKU
Jul. 24
On July 24, Wang Xi, Deputy Governor of Guangdong province, along with the province’s representative team, paid a visit to Peking University. Hao Ping, Secretary of the CPC PKU Committee, Zhang Jin, PKU Vice President and PKUSZ Chancellor, and other PKU leaders attended the meeting.

Vice Minister of Education
visits PHBS UK
Jul. 28
On June 28, Wu Yan, Vice Minister of Education, led a representative team to visit PHBS UK in Oxford. PKUSZ Chancellor Zhang Jin and PHBS Founding Dean Hai Wen were present during the visit.

PKUSZ welcomes its international students
Jul. 26
On August 26, around 80 new foreign students joined in an afternoon outing co-organized by Taoyuan Subdistrict Office and PKUSZ on the city’s 43rd birthday as the Special Economic Zone. They toured the Xili Lake International Talent Communication Center and were introduced to tourist attractions in Shenzhen, before a music show on PKUSZ campus.

PKUSZ to hold 2023 new student welcoming show
Sep. 27
On September 27, PKUSZ will hold an evening show to welcome new students. The show will last for two hours, according to PKUSZ Student Union, and now calls for MC application to both Chinese and foreign students.

White Dew – the Bailu
Sep. 8
The Bailu, or the White Dew, is the 15th solar term of the year. It indicates the real beginning of cool autumn. The temperature declines gradually and vapors in the air often condense into white dew on the grass and trees at night.

End of Heat – the Chushu
Aug. 23
The Chushu, or the End of Heat, is the 14th solar term of the year, begins this year on Aug 23 and ends on Sep 6. It implies that most parts in China are getting rid of the hot summer and entering autumn.

Chinese Valentine’s Day –
the Qixi
Aug. 22
The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese folk festival and is regarded as the Chinese Valentine’s Day. It symbolizes love and embodies a romantic story of the couple – Niulang and Zhinv.

Beginning of Autumn – the Liqiu
Aug. 8
The Liqiu, the thirteenth solar term, marks the beginning of autumn. It indicates a gradual process of the Yin replacing the Yang but does not lead to an immediate end of the hot summer.

Dragon Boat Festival – the Duanwu
Jun. 22
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of May of the lunar calendar. It features zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice pudding, and Longzhou, dragon boats.

PHBS founds a new research center
PHBS-HFRI Asset Management Research Center was recently founded as the school’s new effort to apply advanced quantitative research methods into studies. The center is dedicated to combine theory and practice and to promote the cooperation between academia and asset management enterprises, according to PHBS.

Huang Hao Group at PKUSZ recently published a research paper entitled The S1'-S3' Pocket of the SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease Is Critical for Substrate Selectivity and Can Be Targeted with Covalent Inhibitors on Angewandte Chemie Int’l Edition.

Zhang Min Group publishes paper on ACS Nano
Zhang Min Group at School of Electronic and Computer Engineering (SECE) recently published a research paper entitled Bilingual Bidirectional Stretchable Self-healing Neuristors with Proprioception on top-tier journal ACS Nano.

Pan Feng Group publishes paper on Nature Protocols
Pan Feng Group at School of Advanced Materials (SAM) recently published a research paper entitled In situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics study of interfacial water on a single-crystal surface on Nature Protocols.

Meng Hong Group publishes paper on Advanced Materials
Meng Hong Group at School of Advanced Materials (SAM) recently published a research paper entitled Ultra-Fast, Energy-Efficient Electrochromic and Thermochromic Device for Smart Windows on Advanced Materials.

Jia Dun publishes collaborative paper on Review of Finance
Assistant Professor Jia Dun from PHBS recently published his collaborative paper entitled Information Acquisition, Uncertainty Reduction, and Pre-announcement Premium in China on the top-tier journal Review of Finance.

Tang Yinuo publishes collaborative paper on Journal of International Business Studies
Assistant Professor Tang Yinuo at PHBS recently published his collaborative research paper entitled Learning from Inbound Foreign Acquisitions for Outbound Expansion by Emerging Market MNEs on Journal of International Business Studies.
