【节日】St. Patrick's Day! How many things can we turn green?

大牛 Culturalbility 2019-11-29

Saint Patrick's Day 圣帕特里克节 is a cultural and religious celebration held every year on March 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.

Celebrations generally involve public parades, festivals, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Some Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.

It's a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival.

Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America.

On St. Patrick's Day, it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories. And be careful, if you're not wearing anything with the color green on 3/17, people might even try to pinch you. The color green has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s and the phrase "wearing of the green" comes from a song of the same name, which laments United Irishmen supporters being persecuted for wearing green. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the color green and its association with St Paddy's grew to what we have today:

Literally everything can become green on March 17!
