Mountain Emei

Mount Emei is a mountain in Sichuan Province,China, and is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. Mt. Emei sits at the westernrim of the Sichuan Basin. The mountainswest of it are known as Daxiangling. A large surrounding area of countryside is geologically known as the PermianEmeishan Large Igneous Province, a large igneous province generatedby the Emeishan Traps volcaniceruptions during the Permian Period. At 3,099metres (10,167 ft), Mt. Emei is the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China.

Mt. Emei is one of the fourmost divine Buddhism Mountains in China. It is a sacred Buddhist haven. This Buddhist legacy mainly contained in the numerous temples andthe buildings bears witness to the unusual historical role of the mountain inBuddhism development since the religion was introduced to China over 2,000years ago. The mountain enjoys great popularity among Buddhists in China. Every morning streams of Buddhism pilgrims armed with joss sticks conquer the steepstairs of the mountain and swarm into the countless temples. Today the Buddhist culture has become the main body of Emei Culture. The Buddhist architecture, music, grottos and paintings in the mountain all reflect richreligious flavor and culture.

Mt. Emei is well-known for its enjoyable natural scenery, extensive Buddhist culture, abundant range of species andunique landform. Thus it gets such titles as 'Kingdom of Plants', 'Geological Museum', 'Animals' Paradise' and 'Buddhist Celestial Mountain'. It is towering, beautiful, old and mysterious. It is like a huge green screen standing in the southwest of the Chengdu Plain. It is the highest one among all the famous sight-seeing mountains in China.

Leshan Giant Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddhais a statue of Maitreya which is a Bodhisattva usually represented as a verystout monk with a broad smile on his face and with his naked breast and paunchexposed to view in sitting posture.Facingthe river, the Buddha has symmetrical posture and looks which have beenbeautifully captured in its solemn stillness. It is 71 meters (about 233 feet)high, and has 8.3-meter-long (about 27 feet) fingers. The 9-meter-wide (about30 feet) instep is big enough for one hundred people to sit on and the24-meter-wide (about 79 feet) shoulder is large enough to be a basketball playground. The statue makes itself the most renowned scenic spot in thatcity. In December, 1996, the location of the Buddha was included by UNESCOon the list of the World Heritage sites.

Begun in the year 713 inthe Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803, the statue took peoplemore than 90 years to carve. During these years, thousands of workers had expended their efforts and wisdom on the project. As the biggest carved stone Buddha in the world, the Giant Buddha is featured in poetry, song and story.Having such a long history and such worldwide fame, the renovation of the Buddha has received extensive attention both athome and abroad. The Buddha was nearly destroyed by the erosion of wind andrain before 1963 when the Chinese government began the repairing work. Atpresent, the maintenance work is in progress under the instruction of expertsfrom UNESCO.

Sichuan Face opera

We cannot talk about face changing without mentioning Sichuan opera. Sichuan Opera is one of many local operas in China, popular in the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. Face changing is not simply changing one’s facial make up in a casual way, but is aspecial technique in the performance of Sichuan Opera. It refers to the changing of masks in quick succession to show different emotions and feelings of the character in the play. It is said the origin of face changing has something to do with the resistance of wild beasts. In ancient times, when coming across a ferocious animal, people used to draw different patterns ontheir faces to scare the animal away and keep themselves safe. Later on, suchtrick was applied to the stage performance of Sichuan Opera, and the unique artof face changing has thus come into being.

Sichuan Mahjong experience

Mahjong isa tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played byfour players (with some three-player variations found in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia). The game and itsregional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asiaand have become popular in Western countries too. The game has also beenadapted into a widespread online entertainment. Similar to the Westerncard game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance.

Sometimes the giant pandas are all sleeping indoors, so that you can’tsee any of them eating, playing, or climbing outside. The base began with 6giant pandas rescued from the wild and after years of successful breeding programs they now have a total of 97 pandas. Visitors will find large, outdoor enclosures which make the center feel a bit less like a zoo. Admittedly, thepandas near the entrance seem a little gloomy under the constant gaze of large groups of tourists, but walk further into the park away from the crowds and youwill find contented looking pandas enjoying in their favorite pastimes:sleeping, eating and occasionally exerting some energy to cheekily push their brother or sister off the branch of a tree.

It is the home of the Buddhist Association of Sichuan Province and Chengdu City. Initially built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Wenshu Monastery was once called Xinxiang Temple. In 1681, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi ofthe Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Cidu, an accomplished Buddhist monk, came to thetemple. He built a simple hut between two trees and for several years lived anascetic life there. Legend has it when Cidu was being cremated; the statue of Wensu (Bodhisattva Manjusri in Sanskrit) appeared in the flames, staying for along time. So people regarded Cidu as the reincarnation of the Bodhisattva  Manjusri. Thereafter, Xinxiang Temple became Wenshu Monastery.
