When our mind is free from any attachment, that’s when we are the happiest; however, once we get attached to something, suffering begins.
Our sufferings always come from what we obsess about, such as relatives, friends, houses, cars, wealth and fame, etc. These fixations are indeed the root of our afflictions. “Ah, I haven’t owned a car yet”, “my child hasn’t started school yet”, “I should hurry up and start cooking”, “I must go to work immediately”, “I have to go meet someone”, etc.; all these make us feel like we are as busy as a president sometimes. The more attached we are, the more sufferings we experience.
So where does the joy and freedom of studying the Dharma manifest itself?
Look at spiritual practitioners and monastics: they may live a rather hard life, so why are they still so happy and cheerful? This is because they possess the utmost freedom and ease in their mind, detached from any mental sufferings. Then are there any concerns in their mind? Yes, indeed. Each and every sentient being concerns them!
If the goal for one’s spiritual practices or monasticism is only to benefit the self, and one is preoccupied day and night only with the self, such as “I want to study the Buddhadharma”, “I want to practice the Dharma”, “I want to be healthy”, “I want to avoid falling into the three lower realms”, “I want to attain Buddhahood”, “I want to be reborn in the Western Pureland”, etc, then our minds are attached to the self every day, and there is no way to achieve the state of a bodhisattva.
For those who have aroused bodhicitta, what is their goal for Dharma studies, monasticism, ascetic practices, and going on retreat in the mountains? It is indeed to benefit all sentient beings and free all of them from suffering. Therefore, they commit themselves day in and day out to the threefold practices of study, contemplation and meditation, the accumulation of merit and virtue as well as protecting and teaching the Dharma. They help all sentient beings and disseminate the Buddha’s teachings.
Before really being able to benefit all sentient beings, one can start by making an aspiration of bodhicitta. It is of immense merit to make the vow in front of sentient beings and the Three Jewels, to benefit all beings and emancipate them from sufferings. In doing this, we plant a great field of merit and virtue for ourselves. Once we have made the aspiration, we must remember that we have taken the vow in front of all beings, the Guru and the Three Jewels, hence, regardless of what difficulties we might encounter in the future, even threats to our lives, we would always bear it in mind and fulfill our vows.
How does a bodhisattva make aspirations? From the day they make the aspiration to attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings, the bodhisattvas have already let go of everything of the self, including personal emotion, wealth, fame, etc. Fully engaged in studying, reflecting and practicing, they propagate the Buddhadharma, vowing to attain Buddhahood. What’s their goal? It is this vow - “I have made the aspiration in front of my guru to free all sentient being from suffering and benefit all of them”.
As long as you make aspirations in this way, you will possess a sense of responsibility and have a kind of power in your life, and this is the power of your aspiration.
Why aren’t the bodhisattvas afflicted by suffering? When our minds are preoccupied with even one person, we experience a lot of afflictions, while the bodhisattvas are concerned about countless number of sentient beings all the time. Doesn’t that make it difficult for them to carry on with their lives? No, it doesn’t. Concerned about all sentient beings with love, the bodhisattvas dedicate everything to them, including their own lives. Working for all beings every minute and second, sometimes they really are much busier than a president. Meanwhile, they are in possession of great wisdom in their minds, which enables them to serve sentient beings without any clinging. As they are not attached and grasping, their work for other beings does not bring them any suffering but rather great joy for both themselves and others.
