This website aims to present Chinese propaganda posters through virtual exhibitions, theme presentations and a web-database. It also provides additional information in the form of biographical notes of poster artists, resources, etc. chineseposters.net is a work in progress, continually growing to become a true showcase for one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of poster propaganda, and a visual chronicle of the history of modern China.
Most posters featured on this website are from the collections of Stefan Landsberger and the International Institute of Social History (IISH, Amsterdam, Netherlands), currently numbering over 5,500 pieces. A growing number of posters from an anonymous private collection of over 800 pieces are being included as well.
The website is owned and maintained by the Chinese Posters Foundation. Stefan R. Landsberger (Leiden University, University of Amsterdam) is editor and responsible for contents; Marien van der Heijden (International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam) is co-editor and website designer. chineseposters.net went online in September 2007.
chineseposters.net is a platform for the presentation of authentic documentary and historical information without the aim to propagate or dispute any political views. chineseposters.net tries to provide information that may serve to understand the history of Chinese poster propaganda in all its aspects as well as the history of modern China. As part of the Chinese Posters Foundation, chineseposters.net is a strictly non-profit initiative. Any income gained will be used to fund further acquisition, preservation, cataloguing, research, and presentation of Chinese propaganda posters.
