About the position

At the Department of Computer Science, there is a vacancy for a full-time permanent associate professor in Computer Science.The associated professor is expected to play a major role in be teaching and supervision in computer science. The position will primarily support the Bachelor in Engineering - Computer Science. The associate professor will play a role in developing the educational profile in the computer science programs and ensuring an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders.

The faculty’s study programs should have a strong international profile, and the associate professor is expected to be able to contribute to the development of international alliances and collaboration.

The position reports to head of department.

Work description

The associate professor is expected to carry out research in applied machine learning, and in particular machine learning applied to colour and visual computing, big data, or modern distributed computing. In addition, the research should have a long-term perspective according to the strategy of the department and contribute to the current group research.

The candidate must have very good programming and software engineering background, and a strong background in applied computer science. The candidate must be able to teach programming and software engineering on a bachelor level. Likely courses include “software engineering” and “programmering”. Advantage if the candidate has knowledge of java programming.

Research activities at the department rely crucially on external funding, and the development of educational programs may also receive external funding. The associate professor is expected to work actively to receive research grants and other external funding from the Research Council of Norway, Nordic and European research and educational agencies, relevant industry, and other available sources.

In addition to the responsibilities in teaching and research, an associate professor is expected to be able to disseminate relevant parts of her/his research to a wider audience. The associate professor is furthermore expected to participate in the formal management of research, education, and other relevant areas of activity in agreement with the Department Head.

Qualification requirements

Associate Professor: 

The position of Associate Professor requires university education, and academic competence in at least at doctoral level. 

The ability to initiate and lead research and development work will be emphasized. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within his or her subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work during the past five years (depending on the disciplinary tradition). 

The candidate must

Hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in computer science, machine learning or a closely related area have a strong background and expertise in applied computer science, programming and software engineering have a strong background and expertise in applied machine learning, and in particular machine learning applied to colour and visual computing, big data, or modern distributed computing be able to teach courses in our Bachelor in computer engineering (“programming” and “software engineering”) have experience and potential in teaching, research and scientific output be able to lead, conduct, consult and collaborate in research projects within applied computer science

Advantage if the candidate has knowledge of java programming.

She or he should have a good publication record in terms of recent papers in international peer reviewed journals and recent publications in other relevant, well-known international publication channels. Documented external funding and experience with research leadership will be rated positively. Experience in collaboration with industry or relevant public-sector institutions is an advantage. The candidate must be able to document significant research experience and contributions in the international frontline within the field of the position.

Experience with development of courses and educational activities, and supervision of students will be regarded as positive for applicants to the associate professorship. The applicants should also demonstrate the communication skills required for excellent teaching, supervision and dissemination.

The candidate's personal aptitude and motivation for the position will be assigned great weight in the selection process.

Other requirements: 

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral and master’s degree subjects as well as other types of pedagogical background. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be evaluated.   

Employees who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programmewithin two years of appointment. 

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities. 

Mastering Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is an advantage for the position, and will be assigned weight in the selection process,and will be assigned weight in the selection process. It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of associated professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 515.200 to NOK 682.200 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.
