1930年,瑞典教练古斯塔夫-霍尔梅尔(Gustaf Holmér)决定,为了提高越野跑选手的比赛速度,他们必须以更快的速度进行训练;尽管如此,他们的训练时间必须更短。这种训练方式当时被称为Fartlek,在瑞典语中是 "速度时间 "的意思,Holmér的选手们进行了一段时间的快速奔跑,中间穿插着以恢复为目的的慢速奔跑。运动员们接受了这个概念(毕竟,没有痛苦,就没有收获),于是我们现在所说的高强度间歇训练(HIIT)诞生了。然而,在随后的90年里,超过最大可持续速度的强度训练所经历的不仅仅是名称的改变。
