Call for Papers for Special Issue on: Food Loss and Waste: Evidence for effective policies
Guest editors:Andrea Cattaneo, Marco V. Sánchez, Máximo Torero, and Rob Vos.
There are probably few issues in the international food policy debate around which a stronger consensus can be found than the need to reduce food loss and waste (FLW). It has become a major global issue, and the need to reduce FLW is enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which even set a specific target related to the reduction of FLW. SDG target 12.3 calls for a halving, by 2030, of global per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels and a reduction of food loss along production and supply chains, including post-harvest loss.
The guest editors invite the submission of papers to be considered for publication in a special issue of Food Policy. The motivation for the special issue is that, although FLW reduction is at the forefront of the policy debate, the evidence that can inform policymakers on the topic is extraordinarily sparse and heterogeneous in terms of methods and definitions. Despite recent advances, and the growing literature on FLW, particularly on losses, the guest editors believe there is a need to bring together issues of measurement, determinants of FLW, and trade-offs linked to policies or actions for reducing FLW.
The guest editors invite submissions focusing on policy-relevant original contributions related to food loss and waste. Areas of particular interest – to generate evidence that guides policymaking – are the relationship that food loss (along the supply chain) and food waste (by consumers) have with (i) economic efficiency, (ii) environmental impacts of the food system, and (iii) food security and nutrition. A common denominator for contributions will be theoretical or empirical analysis that provides new insights on entry points for policy interventions to reduce food loss and waste. Priority will be given to papers that focus on FLW at the retail and consumer stage in the context of developing countries, including methodologies for measurement and/or analysis of interventions to reduce waste.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed following journal policy. Published papers must follow the formatting standards of Food Policy at the time of publication. Formatting instructions can be found online here. Papers for this special issue should be between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Full draft papers should be submitted by August 15, 2019 via Editorial Manager (https://www.editorialmanager.com/foodpolicy/). Please select this special issue from the drop-down menu that will appear in the submissions portal after you log in to the site.
