The Frontiers of Neurocognitive Research towards Syntactic Learning, Processing, and Teaching
Syntax is esteemed as a landmark of human language competence. Under the theoretical linguistic perspectives, the essential human language faculty is proposed to be recursive Merge and Labeling, by which the hierarchical structure of human language could be constructed. Syntactic learning and processing is crucial for second language comprehension and production. Thus, this talk aims to introduce the frontier neurocognitive studies on these associated themes so as to provide some brain evidence and to enlighten future syntactic learning, processing and teaching studies.
In the part of neurocognitive mechanisms of human syntax, I will introduce several EEG and fMRI studies considering the interaction of syntax and semantics, simple Merge, complex syntax learning and processing in both human adults and infants, cross-cultural syntactic learning and so on. Moreover, the cross-species comparison is also very inspiring for assessing the nature of human syntax and exploring language evolution. Therefore, in the part of non-human animal syntactic learning/ processing, I will introduce some intriguing paradigms and experiments, and ask the audience to reconsider the main features of human syntax. Finally, we will consider the specialty of Chinese and discuss some promising future research directions.
To sum up, neurocognitive research of syntax would provide new insights for understanding human language, and supporting language learning and teaching in a profounder fashion.
